no surprise the Pats won......not the best super bowl, but than again the super bowl is never really a good game, always low scoring.

Hmm, no-name Patsies? I'd say Brady is a huge name now. And Branch, who's been a good receiver since he entered the league. And Harrison...Vrabel...Bruschi...Dillon...Law...Vinatieri. Plenty of names on that team, but for some reason people don't seem to know them too well? I just don't understand the "no star player" thing. All of the above are pro bowlers.
The Eagles fans outnumbered Pats fans by a lot. I think part of that had to do with the fact that many Pats fans got a hold of tickets and saw a huge money maker with the demand for tickets from the Eagles fans, as it was their first trip in 20-plus years.
Observations on my end:
- This was the fifth super bowl in 19 years the Pats have been to...even with a couple of horrible, horrible seasons in the early 90's, that's pretty impressive despite their mostly awful history prior to 1985.
- This was very winnable for the Eagles. They definitely threw the game away. But in the last two super bowls, where the Pats were heavily favored going in, at LEAST one member of the secondary went down with a broken arm in each game. Harrison broke his arm in two places last year and came back. Same with Wilson this year. That injured an already-depleted secondary (and last year? 42 different starters and they still hung on and came back after trailing late in the game? That's poise). Had Poole and Law been in that game, I feel confident the margin of victory would have been wider. No disrespect to Philly intended; the Pats made their share of mistakes too.
- Neither Law nor Poole will be back next year, most likely. Makes me worry about their secondary, but the coaching staff prepared for their lack of depth by asking Brown and Davis to practice in the secondary. I'm sure Pioli and Belichick will have yet another great draft and be able to hold up well next season in that area.
- Yes, Weis and Crennel are gone, and with them goes part of the system that's worked for the Pats for a while, but I'm still confident about their chances next year. They won without Law this year. Dillon, Brady, Bruschi, Vrabel, McGinest, Brown etc. will all be back, even if Patten leaves. The core of the team will remain together, they'll add some new faces, probably have another good draft with guys who are intelligent football players and who want to come play for a winner, etc. I say they go 12-4 next year and make some waves in the playoffs, even if they finally lose to indy (if Indy can go 13-3 and get homefield, it'll be tough on anyone, but remember - only one dome team has ever won the super bowl, and they did it w/ homefield and playing the super bowl in a dome).
- Ben Watson will be back next year and hopefully, will remain healthy. That means they'll have Watson and Graham at tight end. Look for the Pats to continue with downfield threats in 05 - they will run slants to their TE's as both have great hands and are quick and big, but those two guys willl also provide extra blocking during blitz packages, etc. giving Brady more time to throw the ball. With Weis gone, I say they go with plenty of two-tight end sets during games as well.
- Colvin announced his return to the whole world during the Super Bowl (despite a silly penalty). he was never the best linebacker in the league, but he's very very good and it looks like he'll finally be able to work on his speed again during the offseason after his broken hip sidelined him for over a year. He'll be yet another quality linebacker; the Pats are just too deep there for anyone to touch them in that area; they'll give QB's and tight ends problems next year again.

ok off topic - I hate Bruschi that mother f***er! That guy does shit and everyone praises him, yet he's not even the main part of that defense. He's just finds himself in the right place at the right time, and the media seems to love him. Harrison and the corners are the main stars of that defense not him.
with that said, I don't think the Patriots won that game so much, as the Eagles lost it. The Eagles D played great and shook up Brady pretty well (especially trotter coming up the middle). But damn Mcnabb didn't have a good day - if he played like his normal self then the Eagles win that game. Did anyone notice him hardly throwing any spirals, and completely being off target with most of his throws?
He made a ton of bad decisions like the clock management at the end, throwing into double coverage all the time, leaving freddie mitchell open the whole game.
And wtf was wrong with andy reid? If TO can get a guranteed first down every play then pass him the fuckin ball ever damn play! at least if they put double coverage on him then Westbrook or another receiver would automatically open up.
That was such an easy win but they let it go

Mc Nabb was a non entity for someone who should have had great presence. shame, Phily got so close, but couldn't do it.

Bruschi has been overlooked for way too long by people just like you. The media does NOT love him; they ignored him until this year. Look at his stats, his tackles, his interceptions. Being in the right place at the right time is like 90% of defense in football, esp. if you're a linebacker! He represents the Pats so well - just an intelligent football player; doesn't need to be a star, doesn't need to be huge. Not sure how you can ever say he's overrated. He's an incredible linebacker.
The corners are the stars? Like Law and Poole, who didn't play all season...? Bruschi stepped up big this year, and every year since he's been here.
the entire Eagles squad, including the coaches, made bad decisions regarding clock managment at the end of that game. But even so, the Eagles didn't lose it; the Pats won. They answered with a score of their own and had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter when it mattered. The Pats, in the last two super bowls, have had one of their stronger members of their secondary play with a broken arm at the end of the game - Harrison last year and Wilson this year. And Brady was fine in the second half, which is usually what he does.
The biggest difference in the game was coaching. Look at the last two super bowls; the pats managed the clock beautifully and made the plays when they needed to. I really believe Andy Reid is one of the best coaches in the league, which is why that debacle at the end surprised me so much.
For a team that made both the Colts and Steelers look silly in consecutive weeks, I was surprised it was that close, but they hung on again and won, which is what they do.
