You know the drill, what are the five albums from 1996 that you think are the best?
1996 was not a banner year for me like 1995, and I don't know as many albums from this year, but that's not to say that I think it was a bad year! Just not as good in comparison. My absolute favs are:
Endtroducing..... Richard D. James Album Odelay Technicolour The Score

In no particular order : DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...A lot of albums start with powerful defining opening statements and then don't really follow up on them. Building Steam With A Grain of Salt is a notable exception. Underworld - Second Toughest In The InfantsJuanita starts, then think "Yeah, this sounds pretty good". Then when it reaches the Kiteless bit.... " " Tricky - Pre-Millennium TensionBetter than Maxinquaye imo. Maxinquaye's nice, this isn't, which I prefer. The unrelenting heaviness of this album right to the end brings it into its own. Future Sound of London - Dead CitiesWasn't available on the poll... Their best album imo, the amount of variety on this thing from ambient to neoclassical to big beat to glitch to trip-hop to dnb, whilst still holding together completely naturally... Massively underrated. Bardo Pond - AmanitaFor the uninitiated, Bardo Pond are sort of psychedelic/shoegaze/noise/blues/prog/folk/stoner/hard rock.... Ok, that wasn't so descriptive. Imo, they're up there with Kevin Shields for how they can sculpt guitar distortion into some of the most beautiful sounds whilst still having their own completely distinct sound. This album's one of the ones that's more of a landmark in their discography, mainly for how well pop and hard psychedelia become one and the same. Be A Fish feels what I guess it'd be like to drunkenly stumble into a hurricane and having to somehow ride it out. Honourable mention to Mainliner - Mellow Out. Easily one of the most inaccurate album titles in history.

If You're Feeling Sinister and Tigermilk. Then, Odelay. I have to think about the rest.
1997 is gonna be fucking awesome.

Went with If You're Feeling Sinister. I really like Moseley Shoals, which is not on the list.

I haven't listened to any of these albums in full Get on Endtroducing as soon as you can. One of the most sonically innovative and mindblowing albums I have ever heard - and one of my all-time favorites. Fuck the music industry executive for cracking down on sampling - here DJ Shadow cuts up songs from so many disparate sources to create whole new worlds. And it's not too far from the trip-hop sound pioneered by Massive Attack and Portishead, but far more fun.

I haven't listened to any of these albums in full If You're Feeling Sinister has to be the n°1 in your " to listen" list. Great melodies after melodies, subtle arrangements, very stripped back and the perfect album for that moment of the year (autumn/winter).

From the poll? The Divine Comedy and the Manics, just because
1. They're the only ones I've heard in full; and 2. They're both Britpop. As. Fuck.

But The Brian Jonestown Massacre definitely deserve a mention. They brought THREE albums out that year! I've only heard one of them, Take It from the Man!, but it's a real belter.

Only two of my top 5 of the year are on the list so I voted for both of those. But here are my top 5:
1. Fuzzy Logic – Super Furry Animals 2. One Chord to Another – Sloan 3. Moseley Shoals – Ocean Colour Scene 4. Odelay – Beck 5. K – Kula Shaker

Tough year to call for me
Beck's Odelay probably nips it, but DJ Shadow, Weezer and Super Furry Animals run it close.
Ash 1977 is a underrated gem as is Moseley Shoals and K from Kula Shaker, remember those three albums been played nons top by me and my brother when we were young. Always find it sad that K by Kula Shaker and Ash aren't given the respect they deserve. Free All Angel's ASh's third album is one of the best albums of the 00's for me.
