What does "best band" mean? Do I have to take into account their legacy and cultural impact? Does it mean anything different from "favorite band"? Do I have to like more than one of their albums? What if they only released one album? What if I haven't heard all their albums? Do solo artists count? Anyway, despite all the uncertainty, futility, and meaninglessness surrounding this kind of ranking, here's my shot at something resembling a top 10, using the criteria of "do I really enjoy 3 or more albums by them?" Which is still a very arbitrary measurement given how many groups I only like one or two albums from, but it's still something.
The Beatles Radiohead Kanye West Bob Dylan Oasis Miles Davis Disco Inferno St. Vincent Brian Eno Blur

Even with solo artists allowed, I can only go as far as a top 6. I could probably present a proper top 10-list if I put some work to it, but I guess the point with a list like this is which bands/artists you write down without even thinking about it. So anyway, my top 3 is pretty much set in stone, although the first two may switch places now and then. But as for now... 1. Tom Waits 2. The Smiths 3. Queens of the Stone Age And then there are these three... 4. Neil Young 5. Oasis 6. Red Hot Chili Peppers In a top 10 I would probably add Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, but then I would have 8 artists and probably force myself to come up with the other two. So in order to save myself both time and energy, a top 6 will have to do

I often find that they are often ranked in my top four REM albums. I really do find it difficult to differentiate in quality between mostly all the albums from 1983-1996. Hard to think of an act as consistently high quality and prolific as them for so long.

Fall On Me, Begin The Begin, Fall On Me, Driver 8, Perfect Circle, etc, really really great compilation.

REMs best stuff is definitely the first four/five albums,
Up until Up was great too but those early albums are outstanding

Funny that no one has mentioned The Velvet Underground or Can. Two massively influential bands that helped reshape pop music to be more adventurous and daring.
