I really enjoyed Holy Mountain when it first came out and listened to it loads. However in the last few days I've had no real urge to play it. Weird. It may be out of the frustration of paying 18 POUNDS for the picture disc single and I have to wait until the album comes out to get it and only then can I listen to the b-side which at that point will be readily available on the album anyway. RIDICULOUS. The Holy Mountain single for me is Dead In The Water.

Full disclosure: I played this song so much over the weekend that I became so sick of it that I was almost willing to believe the naysayers, that this was one of Noel's worst songs ever released. But after taking a break of a few days to listen to St. Vincent's newest album, I put Holy Mountain on again and it tore me out of my chair and forced my legs into a (n admittedly awkward) dance just like it did when I first heard it.
If that isn't a sign of a great song then I don't know what is.

Not sure being urged into an awkward dad dance is enough for greatness

As with a lot of things, it was surprising to start with. A new song on first listen very rarely matches what you expected in your head. It's by no means a bad song. I'm delighted that Noel finally appears willing to release something different to his usual autopilot output. It's really exciting to have an album coming up where none of us can tell how it's going to sound. Honestly, if it were another album full of "The Girl With X-Ray Eyes" style tripe, I'd be far less enthused. It's been done to death at this point. And yet, that's precisely the kind of change I'm seeing so many people incensed by. Where I'm from, the people most annoyed by it are those who haven't listened to anything outside of Oasis' first two records in about 2 or 3 years, which I couldn't be happier with. Obviously all guesswork at this point, but if Noel can release something that actually challenges (and, dare I say it, alienates) the knuckledraggers on this occasion then that can only be a good thing. As they sit there bemoaning the lack of Beatles references and basic chiming 60's guitar solos, maybe it'll actually wake them up to music outside of their little bubble. Long overdue, I'd say. I've read that a lot these last weeks from different people and this is something I can't understand: being happy that some people dislike a tune, saying that it's because they probably haven't ecclectic tastes and because they're all conservatives. I think it's is quite a patronizing attitude. A few of my mates almost only listen to some bubblegum hip hop stuff, don't care about music most of the time and they like Wonderwall. Do I have then questioned the sheer quality of this masterpiece because of that ? Never. There are actually a lot of different profiles of people who like or dislike "Holy Mountain". We're all different. I know it's easier to put people in the same compartment, saying that if you don't like "Holy Mountain" you're just a "conservative" but it is just not true.

Holy Mountain is the third greatest Noel song of all time. Better than Morning Glory.

I could totally see Noel playing Holy Mountain with his band at a 4 year old’s party in the backyard and a clown dancing. That’s the first thing I imagine if I close my eyes and listen to it.

I really am aware that it comes across as patronizing, it was hard to find a way around that. I think the frustration is rooted in knowing that so many people will judge the quality of a Noel song by how closely it aligns with such a narrow idea they have of what it should sound like. As you said, it's very easy to lump everyone who dislikes it into the same compartment. Many will have different reasons, for sure, there just seems to be a dominant theme.

But let us not forget the genius of 'Oh, Lord!'. It may only come in at number 5 of best Noel songs of all time, but it's sure to convert anyone who listens to an instant fan.

I've done a lot of research to get to this conclusion, but believe it or not, some people REALLY like the song and some people REALLY don't.
At this point, it's just accepting that.

So a lot of people talked about how Noel needs to move on from his usual sound and do something new/fresh and they kind of got this with "Holy Mountain" as they say. See, i don't find this exciting at all (at least not this song). Not because i don't like the new sound (i don't mind it to be honest) but because of the song itself. There is nothing special about the song but it's production, it's 3 simple chords without much variation. When people talked about a new sound, i thought that they wanted Noel to try out new chords and maybe more complex chord structures. I mean, his formular works great most of the time (i'm obviously a fan as i am a member of this forum) and i don't necessary need him to change his style to enjoy his songs, but a different production won't excite me more than the old production style. Let's take "Ballad Of The Mighty I" as an example: I really love this song and a big reason is the chord structure of the song. There are no super crazy Elliott Smith style chord changes in it, but the change from the verse to the pre chorus is something Noel never did before (correct me if i'm wrong) and it works, sounds great, new and really exciting even though the production is more traditional. If he'd play the song only on an acoutic guitar it would still have that special thing. "Holy Mountain" on an acoustic guitar is just another classic Noel song for me (which lacks good melodies). If that is what people wanted, then i guess i missunderstood them.
Anyway, there are more songs to come and i'm sure i will enjoy some of them. This one, i just didn't

What's wrong with you, man? Don't you know that the only people who are disappointed in Holy Mountain are knuckle-dragging troglodytes who live their lives to a constant loop of Whatever and Some Might Say. It has nothing, NOTHING, to do with the fact that it might be a sub-par Noel Gallagher song dressed up in fancy clothing, I think you're overlooking the fact that I referred to these people as the ones " most annoyed" by it. At no point did I suggest they were the only people to be disappointed.

Ballad of The Mighty I is the best song Noel has ever wrote. In the alternate universe where neither Oasis nor the first NGHFB album existed, sure

that Chile version is mega. band sounding so fucking tight. The Evolution of Bonehead is shining, great to have him back. I had no idea this happened! As for HM, I've warmed to it in the sense that I'm somewhere between "I don't mind it" and "It's kind of nice". More or less, i feel the same way as I did about ITHOTM. Which is fine. I'm happy with the song being just okay to my ears. Listening to it yesterday, I noticed how the sound is darker and more gritty in texture - kind of postpunk- than I imagined the album would be, at least based on the cover art. And Noel's vocals sound a bit like early New Order (Bernard sumner trying to sound a bit like Ian Curtis) - anyone else hear this?

Played Holy Mountain yesterday to two friends. They know Oasis, don't know solo stuff from both Liam and Noel. They said they really liked the song on a first listen. Played them the trailer of the album. They thought it sounded exiting.

“Dance dance, if you do the dance I’m gonna let you join my one man band”
Liam would be raked over the coals if he wrote those lyrics.

The quoted lines are no better than "you live for your toys even though they make noise". Liam at least had the excuse of writing for his stepson, through a dad's eyes. Holy Mountain's still a great tune thanks to its irresistible melody, but the lyrics are wank.
