We're at the point that everything that needs to be said about this song has been said (we were probably at that point a few pages ago). In summary - - some people on this forum absolutely hate it - some people on this forum are indifferent to it, they think its average - some people on this forum absolutely love it - some people on this forum thinks it sounds like a track from BHN er....I think that covers everything. Shall we close this thread now? - Some people hope Noel will be shirtless while singing it

Huge Huge tune. Probably my favourite thing Noel has done so far with High Flying Birds. Absolutey love the new direction he's going in.

I hope you don't mind me posting this Rolo . This is way more enjoyable than the actual song for me, you have a very special talent! Prefer the chord progression on your version - something delicate about it and your vocals are better than Noels. Unbelievable! (don't forget the handclaps ) Don't mind at all mate! Wow, thanks very much glider . I'm not a big fan of the song at all but it was fun to play and sing, would like to hear a Noel version of it acoustically to see how it works out. Haha for some reason after I rendered the video the handclaps were really high in the mix, they were meant to be a lot lower but oh well. Thanks again man. What do you think about the song from a songwriter's point of view when you just play it on acoustic guitar and sing?

Not really understanding why people 'hate' Noel's vocals in this. Is it simply because the verse melodies are vastly different from anything he's ever done before? Granted, the verse isn't even a melody, just one note being sung repeatedly in fact. But who gives a shit? The overall 'wordiness' of it all is one of the song's strengths as it corresponds perfectly with the rhythmic structure of the song, reinforcing a matter of swagger, urgency and vibe. As a result, his voice has more character and sounds more like a real performer rather than a mere backing vocalist. That's a world away from the laboured stretched vocals and melodies of recent years.
It's not all about a simple, straightforward melody with attractive instrumental paraphernalia tacked on to try and make it sound interesting. Not everything has to stick to rigid conventions of songwriting and thankfully Noel has broadened his mind on this, as everything is in sync to perfection, culminating in a great adrenaline rush.
As for those who hate it? It reminds me of a quote from the film Withnail & I.....
Monty: Do you like to sample all facets of life or do you shut yourself off from new experience?
Marwood: I voted Conservative...

I understand why you like it, I don't mind it myself but I'm not sure it warrants that sort of analysis. It might be a bit different for Noel but its 60's dancehall jive music, and I don't really see how it brakes or escapes any general songwriting conventions. Its retro and gallops along at a good pace.

It might be a bit different for Noel but its 60's dancehall jive music, and I don't really see how it brakes or escapes any general songwriting conventions. Its retro and gallops along at a good pace. Modern with retro influences is how I describe it. I think it certainly has a much bigger sound to it than the jive music stated, and the overall sound has more in common with the heavy electronics of the last 20 years that Holmes is a master in. Oasis's classic era was modern with retro influences. You could pick out the individual influences, but it had modern sheen to it that made it contemporary rather than derivative (contrary to what ignorant pretentious smart arses think). This song acts in the same way. Obviously a very different song with very different retro influences, but it does sound modern, and doesn't ape any one or two particular acts (and for those who just scream Ricky Martin, well they need to get out more and broaden their severely limited horizons). That's the sort of trap that Noel and Oasis eventually fell into, and it's great to see Noel bring an amalgamation of many different influences into one song again. He's always better like that, and this is one of his best tunes in years as a result.
