The Sun review - 4 Stars - bottom of interview
Defiant Liam Gallagher lashes out at critics telling him to ‘grow up’ — as his debut solo album As You Were is released
“F*** growing up, mate, I’m growing DOWN.”
Liam Gallagher is reacting to his critics.
The Mancunian rocker, 45, is currently promoting the release of his solo album As You Were
The Mancunian rocker, 45, is currently promoting the release of his solo album As You Were I am in a North London pub with the former Oasis singer and, unsurprisingly, he is mouthing off. Gallagher says it as it is and his followers on Twitter know there is no one quite like him.
He says: “I f***ing love Twitter. I f***ing love it. I know people go, ‘Oh, you need to grow up’. Well, you go and put your f***ing pipe on with your slippers and your hot cocoa and get to bed.
“I am going the other way. F*** that growing-up business.”
It is three years since Gallagher, 45, pulled the plug on Beady Eye, the band he formed when Oasis split in 2009.
Now he is back with his debut solo album — a record oozing with swagger and confidence — and with two fingers up at anyone who had written him off.
Cocksure anthems including Greedy Soul — his favourite — Wall Of Glass and Bold are up there with Oasis’s greatest.
And the music world has missed his hilarious banter.
He says: “It ain’t good enough just to have a good record, as far as I’m concerned.
“You need a bit of character and I am back. I am good at doing interviews as well.
“Everyone seems to put out a good record and they haven’t got f*** all to say. Whether it upsets people or not, at least it’s a stoke in the fire.
“I know a lot of people don’t approve of me and I don’t give a f*** whether they do or not.”
Dressed in a dark Pretty Green coat, looking trim and in good spirits, he is enjoying being back in the spotlight.
Liam says he’ll never tire of mocking his estranged brother Noel He says: “The way I see it, if you put out a record it has to sell.
“I am not doing it for the career. I am doing it because I want to blow people’s f***ing heads off.
“I want it to mean something, to the point of what Oasis did. I am not saying it’s better than Oasis or whatever, but I don’t see the point in doing it if people go, ‘Yeah it’s all right, it’ll do’.
“It doesn’t make me go in and want to do another one. I want it to really f***ing mean something to people and they take it home into their souls and hearts.”
Liam has credited As You Were as an honest record Gallagher has teamed up with producer Greg Kurstin, who has worked with Foo Fighters, Beck and Paul McCartney.
He says: “Noel wrote most of the songs in Oasis and I sang the most. I’m a singer and frontman.
“I don’t give a f*** if I never wrote another song again because I know there are other people out there that want to write for me. I am not precious about it.”
Gallagher got into a rut after upheavals in his personal life.
Noel Gallagher has partnered up with music heavyweights Foo Fighters, Beck and Paul McCartney on his debut album His marriage to All Saints singer Nicole Appleton ended in 2013 when it was revealed he fathered a daughter with US journalist Liza Ghorbani and started a relationship with his manager Debbie Gwyther.
He says: “I was doing a lot of moaning. I was doing nothing, just moaning.
“It was the lawyers. Every morning, lunchtime and night they’d want a quick word.
“People will say, ‘Well, it was your own fault’. But it was three years of living in lawyer world.
“You can’t get a straight answer out of them. It was just like, ‘When is this going to f***ing stop? I’ve given her what she wants, now let’s f***ing move on’.
Liam Gallagher admits his divorce from Nicole Appleton sent him into a depression “Then all of a sudden I got a couple of tunes and away I went.
“Debbie played something to the record label. I had Bold and When I’m In Need and they gave me a deal.
“Then we went out to LA and I met Greg Kurstin and did a couple of tunes with him and it worked out all right.”
Gallagher vowed to never go solo. In January 2016, he tweeted: “Solo record are you f***ing tripping dickhead. I’m not a c*** LG X.” But in August, he posted: “It’s official I’m a c*** LG X.”
Liam and Noel are both releasing solo albums a couple of months apart Today he says: “I prefer being in a band but I thought if I get in another band I am going to have to get a new name and Beady Eye didn’t really connect.
“I thought maybe I’ll put my name against it.
“If I was a proper musician playing instruments, I’d have probably f***ing done one within four years. I don’t do that, I am sort of limited. I can only really sing and write a bit of music.
“Maybe Beady Eye was a rebound. I just think people didn’t like the name.
Liam Gallagher says he is going to ‘keep it together and singing me f***ing little heart out’ “If it had gone under Liam Gallagher it’d been a different kettle of fish. Then the band didn’t want to do Oasis songs, saying we should start from the bottom and do our own songs. That was a silly idea. It’s either, ‘Liam’s in a band or he’s on his own’. They don’t see Wonky Chops & The King Fried Prawn (referring to lesser known bandmates).
“Don’t think for one minute the people coming through the doors are coming to see you or hear your new songs and this Beady Eye thing. They are coming here because they’ve invested in Oasis for 20 years.
“I think the break has done me and other people the world of good. People have missed what I’m about. There’s a lot of love out there and people wanting me to do well with a good album.
“I’ve got to keep it together and singing me f***ing little heart out and hopefully put on a good show.”
Noel once described brother Liam as ‘a man with a fork in a world of soup’ On As You Were, Gallagher also worked with producer Dan Grech-Marguerat, Andrew Wyatt of indie pop band Miike Snow and with Cherry Ghost’s Simon Aldred, who co-wrote the apologetic For What It’s Worth. He says: “I can say sorry. I am not shy at saying sorry and I’ve said it on numerous occasions and we’ve all moved on.
“It’s nice to say it in a song in that kind of way. That is the most Oasis-y kinda of tune on the record. I love it.
“A lot of people are going, ‘Oh, it’s about Noel’. Like I said before, I haven’t got anything to apologise for to Noel. I haven’t done anything wrong. He split the band up. There you go.
“As You Were is an honest record. I didn’t have the time to sit down and go, ‘Right, I am going to write a song about divorce and a song about this’.

Liam Gallagher and brother Noel went their separate ways in 2009 “I wouldn’t be able to do it. Everything that comes in sort of comes out at some point.”
Gallagher says persevering and getting through tough times means he is in a happy place right now — and he is enjoying the attention.
He says: “Yeah, everything is good. My divorce is sorted, so my kids are back in my life and the music is back.
“I’ve got a reason to get up in the morning.”

Oasis fans were left stunned when it was revealed Liam Gallagher’s real name isn’t actually Liam His relationship with Gwyther “saved him” and even when he was down, he was not out of control or on medication.
He says: “I’ve never had a drink problem or a cocaine habit and none of that going into rehab.
“F*** that, mate. Just close the door and get the phone and say, ‘No, I’m not coming out. Goodbye’.
“But now I just go running. I am chilled when I go running. I used to compete at school but then I got into weed and you can’t go running when you’re stoned.

Oasis won the coveted Best British Album award at the 1996 Brit Awards “Now I’m back into it and run about an hour and a half and do hills.”
I ask him if he would ever consider running a marathon.
He says: “A 10k would be a piece of cake but a marathon? Nah, I’m not running with loads of people dressed as eggs.”
Gallagher says he is happy his sons Gene, 16, with Appleton, and Lennon, 18, with first wife Patsy Kensit, are close, though his relationship with brother Noel is unresolved.

Liam with older brother Noel, who he’s not been friendly with since Oasis split in 2009 He says: “Gene and Lennon had an argument the other day. I said, ‘You should call your brother, it’s your birthday’. He went, ‘You can’t talk, you call your brother’. So I can’t win.
“But it’s important I’m with them. You just have to put the time in. Obviously I stitched their mams up and wasn’t nice, but they are cool.
“I tried sitting down to talk to them and they were like, ‘Dad, don’t worry’. They are cooler than anyone else and are close and come and stay.
“They get on with Debbie and they are coming on tour with us when we go to LA.

Liam has compared his brother’s versions of Oasis hits to designer rock ‘n’ roll “They do take the mick out of me and my accent as they sound posh, though not as posh as some of their mates. I’m at school and there’s Theodore, whose dad is a f***ing dentist. I’m not like him.”
Gallagher tries to keep them on the straight and narrow.
He says: “Gene doesn’t smoke but I know they’ll drink or they’ll be outcasts if they stick to peppermint tea. Drugs and girls? I haven’t a leg to stand on, telling them to stay away.
“Though the other day, Gene turned up with love bites and I lost the plot. We were going out for Lennon’s birthday and I said, ‘What the f*** is that on your neck?’ I sent him back to get a jacket. He looked like he’d been f***ing savaged.”

Liam Gallagher was a part of the star-studded line up at Ariana Grande’s benefit concert for Manchester Speaking about his brother and the Oasis split is the only thing that angers Gallagher.
He says: “I am livid my band was split up in a certain way. It was designed to all be put on my shoulders. I’m sore.
“I have still got the royal hump. He blamed me. He was the one that came and smashed my guitar first.
“He knew he was going to split the band up. Way before. Trying to throw your younger brother under the bus because you are not getting enough attention or because your records aren’t selling as much as they used to.

Liam was married to Patsy Kensit from 1997 to 1999 “He’s a slippery c*** because I hear him saying s**t about me. Not in the press but through other people.
“Now it’s time to do the solo thing.
“The people have spoken. They bought all my tickets the other week in record time.
“The new songs are f***ing great. People want a bit of truth juice. A lot of rock’n’roll stars say the same s**t, what people want to hear. People are up for it. I am up for it.

Liam Gallagher said he would reunite with Noel for an Oasis concert immediately “Oasis was everything. I put everything into that band.
“We split up for a lame reason. I do miss being in that band, with my brother and singing all those songs.
“But now I’ve got this on the go and I am getting into this now, do you know what I mean?
“It’s like a game of chess with me and Noel. And no, I’ve not sent him the album. But I know he’s been after it.”
Liam Gallagher’s debut album As You Were is out now And his? “F*** all that experimental, psychedelic nonsense. If you are doing a psychedelic record, at least take drugs.
“I guarantee when a Noel Gallagher record comes out, there will be no drugs on that.
“It will be like U2. Designer f***ing rock’n’roll.
“But if Oasis did happen, my bags are packed, mate. That’s if he ever comes down off his high horse. If he does want Oasis back, I’ll do a gig in half an hour. I am ready to go. And I can guarantee it would be f***ing massive. Now? I do feel there is something going down. And I am the f***ing man, mate.”
As You Were is out today. LIAM GALLAGHER - AS YOU WERE REVIEW
1. Wall Of Glass 2. Bold 3. Greedy Soul 4. Paper Crown 5. For What It’s Worth 6. When I’m In Need 7. You Better Run 8. I Get By 9. Chinatown 10. Come Back To Me 11. Universal Gleam 12. I’ve All I Need

"Noel Gallagher has partnered up with music heavyweights Foo Fighters, Beck and Paul McCartney on his debut album" Say what?! Oh sweet, good on him. 😀 I think you’re in the wrong thread tho or maybe I missed that part in the interview. Edit: I just saw what you quoted. I think it was caption for a photo. I guess Noel was married to Nicole too. 🤣

Surprised the Sun gave him 4/5 stars, thought they had a long time beef with him.

I didn't know he disagreed with that, at the time he seemed to defend this concept in interviews.

I was honestly surprised by the article and pretty sure I spent a minute or two deciding whether to click the link to it. Agreed, he did seem on board with “no Oasis songs” decision. I always wondered how much of a difference that would have made for them, if they had played Oasis songs from the beginning.
