Liam's interview with the Spiegel (big German newspaper).
Rock Riot Liam Gallagher"I'm a rock'n'roll star, 24 hours a day"New Oasis album? He'd be better off than his solo debut. Brit-Rocker Liam Gallagher about the longing for his hate-beloved brother Noel, his gentle side and the claim to make Rock'n'Roll big again.
An Interview by Fabian Peltsch
To person
Liam Gallagher, born in 1972 in Manchester, is one of the most famous and controversial figures of the younger British rock music. In the nineties he gained fame as a big-mouthed singer of the band Oasis, founded by him and his brother Noel, which disbanded in 2009. Since then, the Gallaghers has enjoyed a love of hate, which has been celebrated in public. After two releases with the band Beady Eye "As You Were" is Liam's solo debut. He lives with his girlfriend and manager Debbie Gwyther in London.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: On "As You Were", you will be shown a surprisingly vulnerable site. In a song, you apologize for the mistakes of the past. Is the first solo album of her career at the same time a mild age work?
Gallagher: I've always had this gentle side in me. So it must be: A handful of Rock'n'Roll songs and above a few emotional moments! And I have the same. I do not run on the street every day and threaten the people beating: "Hey, do you want something on the face?" I am a good person, do you understand?
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Actually, the album should be called "Bold", meaning "daring" or "bold." Was that too daring? Do not you have to add so much new to the current rock music ?
Gallagher: I do not want to add anything, I want to show that I'm back. I want to see the darkness between all the shit out there, which in my opinion gets too much attention.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Who or what do you think?
Gallagher: I do not name names. There are simply a lot of bands that do their job wrong. The one moment is a rock band and in the next a dance project. And I think: Decide, damn shit! These guys wear their guitars around their necks as if they were damn jewels. And then you can not even hear the things in their songs! Now that I'm back, people will remember the real shit, the real deal if you know what I mean.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Is it true that you want to stop the music when "As You Were" is not a success?
Gallagher: If the album does not arrive well, I see no reason to record yet another. I'll probably write more songs, but I will not stand in front of the people and expose myself. I hope, of course, that the album means something to some people. But I do not know man, the world is changing. And I'm getting older. When people do not want my stuff anymore, there is no reason to stuff them into their jaws.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You could also appear in front of a small audience in the future.
Gallagher: I love to perform. But I do not want to be a mediocre guy in a small band. I want it big, damn big. Otherwise, the thing makes no sense to me.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: So you still understand yourself as a rock star?
Gallagher: Yes of course! Always. I'm a rock'n'roll star. Around the clock, 24 hours a day. But I am certainly not one: A celebrity.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: For many people this is the one and the ...
Gallagher: Not for me. I do not go on price loans. I'm not hanging out with celebrities. I'm not talking about celebrity magazines. I do not go into trend bars. I have my missus , who manages me, and we do our thing. We do not have to depend on Bono, with jumpers or some damn fucking actors ...
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you also think about her brother Noel ? On Twitter, they accused him of being a "traitor of the working class".
Gallagher: Noel lives today in a completely different world than me. He likes to surround himself with the fancy, while I am still a child of the street. He is only surrounded by yes-sayers. These people cut off the edges. He has become snooty. If your ego is constantly stroked by ass creepers, you forget yourself anyway. Noel is just turning into a kind of bono. I'd like to get him out. I miss the old Noel.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: When did you last talk?
Gallagher: Let's see ... In 2009 we disbanded. In 2011 I met him at a football match and tweaked him in the nipples. He wore this aubergine-colored sweater that did not fit into his faded jeans at all, and I asked, "What's the matter with you, man?"
SPIEGEL ONLINE: On the one hand, you are always making fun of your brother , on the other hand it seems as if the past with him and Oasis are still sacred to you.
Gallagher: I'm still angry that he broke Oasis and blamed me for it. But I'm not sitting with an Oasis plate in my hand at home and crying: Please come back, Noel! But he's supposed to know I'm there for him. I do not want him to happen.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You would be willing to reunite Oasis at any time?
Gallagher: Sure. I'd rather sit here and talk about a new Oasis album. To record a solo album was never a dream of me, fuck no ! Bandalbums are much better. There are far too many solo records, and some of them are responsible for breaking up fantastic bands. Because some guys imagined they had to go on their own.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you think of an Oasis-Reunion, especially a concert or a new album?
Gallagher: Both. I would love to be back on stage with Oasis. And I would like to record new music. I think we still have some great albums in us. And we would give great interviews. The interviews at Oasis were almost as important as the music. Noel was never so keen on it. But I miss our interviews. That was Comedy. We were funny wanker, man!
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you think the world is waiting for a return from Oasis?
Gallagher: Apparently Rock'n'Roll is not particularly popular. I understand why people are constantly asking me about Oasis. After all, there's only shit out there since we've disappeared. Well, there was already good music from time to time, but there were no rock stars, no personalities. The bands play their concerts, pick up their check. Just imagine, Keith Moon would simply have gone to the stage to drum up and then go home! Then The Who would not have been The Who. Rock music needs real characters. And the bands of today have none. In interviews they say exactly what to expect from them because they are afraid to endanger their careers.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: It is said that you go jogging every morning and in the evening at the latest by ten in the bed ...
Gallagher: When you're 20, you take it with everyone and everyone. But when you get older, you simply get tired. I am now 45. I can still party, but I also know when I should go to bed. Quite in contrast to earlier, where I was sometimes awake for three days at a time. I did what I had to do, but for such a shit I'm too old today. I know when the party is over.
