Here the translation!
Liam Gallagher likes boxing, he likes watching it on tv, but he doesn’t do it, “I’m too good looking to let someone smash my face”. He devours matches on tv, he tweets about them and whenever he can, he flies to Las Vegas to see the matches live. And this, it’s the first time that he stands alone, like a boxer on the ring. Liam is not one who likes such a journalistic metaphor “IDK mate, I think it’s bullshit, I like watching people fight, but I don’t feel like a boxer, not even now” – but there’s an album with his name and his face only on it. And there are his name and credibility at the stake. No more Oasis nor Beady Eye. Now Liam Gallagher is just Liam Gallagher.
As You Were will feature 12 tracks that seems to have been taken directly from Oasis, it’s the (successful) attempt to demonstrate that he wasn’t there just to sing his brother songs and thoughts. A lot of these new songs were written by him. To adjust them and to add some new ones he got help from a team made by people that any newbie would like to have near a boxing ring: Greg Krustin…
His life is more well-balanced now: he eats better, he drinks less, he runs for 10 km. All the merit goes to Debbie Gwyther, she was his personal assistant and now his new girlfriend.
In their new house in Highgate he wrote verses like: “In my defense, all my intentions were good, And heaven knows a place somewhere for the misunderstood” the most personal one of the bunch. It’s up to you to decide to whom those words are aimed at, the name list is long, there’s his brother Noel, every single person he fought with, 2 wives he divorced from, 4 kids that he had from 4 different women.
Liam, let’s start with the songs. You have written many of them, what was it like?
- I loved that, I enjoyed doing that. I’m learning little by little. At the end, I’m not a fucking idiot, right?
You are, and always has been, a singer. But when you get older, you can always change job..
- I’m not the kind of guy who forces songs out of him like when he sits on the toilet. I don’t work like that, I wasn’t working on the album inside an office. Actually, I wanted to go to Spain, stay out under the sun, working on putting myself together for a some years. But then, the songs came out of me, one after the other. Let’s put it that way, at the end I’m a singer, a singer that write some songs from time to time.
Listening to As You Were it made me think that you should have written more songs for Oasis
- First thing: if Oasis get ever back together that would be absolutly amazing. Being in a huge band like that was my biggest addiction, and I know what I’m talking about. I don’t know what will happen in the next years, I do my things, Noel does his things, we don’t talk, we don’t listen to each other, maybe it’s better that way,
Do you like Noel “things”?
- I heard them on the radio, let’s say I wouldn’t buy a noel Gallagher album, he’s a great songwriter but all his songs are boring, he sounds like my granddad, do you know what I mean? He makes me asleep.
So we were talking about if Oasis would ever get back together…
- I wouldn’t let him write all the songs, that for sure. I don’t know if Oasis will ever be a thing again, but if it happen we’ll be a more collaborative band. As for now, I enjoy seeing only my name on boards. I like knowing that I’m singing great songs that are only mine. Maybe it doesn’t look like that on the outside, but i feel good in my skin, I like being me. I promise you one thing.
What is it?
- If this album is not well received, I say “that’s enough”. I’m not desperate, I don’t need more money, if people don’t like it then you won’t hear another word from me. I hate those pathetic assholes who go up on a stage even when their time is over. Ah! I promise you one more thing, it’s either Liam or Oasis, no more bands for me.
Yet people are already enjoying this new Liam going solo. Were you scared of being on the stage again?
- If there is one thing you can be sure of, is that Liam Gallagher is not afraid of being on a stage. I’m the first one to go up and the last one to go off. God has to kick me in the ass the day I’ll be afraid of taking a mic in my hand.
Translation: Liam Gallagher is never scared.
- There’s nothing to be afraid of mate. Everyone must die at some point. I’m 45 years old, I’ve learned to live in the present, I don’t care about the future and the past. I had a great life, I have travelled around the world, I have a great woman at my side, my kids are healthy, I have money in my pockets, there’s always a plate on my table, I got a new album, what should a I be afraid of?
You tell me- Just one thing, to lose my voice. I’m nothing without my voice. As long as my voice is there I’ll be on top form.
-
You’re an early riser and a jogger, something your fans still don’t believe, despite of all the pictures of you running.
- You’ve seen them, right? Than you have to believe it. When I run I feel like a different human being, someone less complicated. I look at the trees, I look at them damn birds, and all of this shit makes me feel better, they can distract me from myself, so that for an hour I don’t need anything else.
What’s your attitude towards your age, about getting older, about time flying?
- I became hotter, aging suits me. I wouldn’t like being 23 again, not even for all the money in this world. I’m 45 and still rocking, even better now, and I’m enjoying it more now. So I’m fine with it.
What kind of other habits have you changed?
- Everything is slower now. I learned how to control myself. I’m not interested in getting messed up for 3 nights straight anymore. I’ve done it, it was fun, but that’s enough. Now if I go to a party I stay there for a couple of hours, and then go back home.
That’s what happen to a rockstar at 40?
- All this narrative about rock n roll life is a joke that we keep on carry on as it was still funny. I’m Liam Gallagher, my job is to sing rock n roll songs. It’s what I do and sometimes what I am, but you should stop making it (the lifestyle) more than what it really is.
Jeremy Corbin, the leader of the labour party, attended the Glastonbury Festival, did you listened to him?
- I don’t give a fuck about listening a politician at Glastonbury. Rock n roll is rock n roll, politics is politics, you shouldn’t put the two together. Corbyn looks like a nice guy, but politicians always smell the same, and he also looks like a judgemental. I don’t really care about him, I haven’t heard a single word of what he said.
Yet, you always talk about your working class roots and said you’ll vote labour
- I live in a nice house, I eat at the finest restaurants in London, but you know what? I will always feel at home in a pub drinking some beer with a stranger. I know how to be around with people, to me this is what working class means: people that enjoy being with other people.
Do you go to the stadium?
- Since I live in London not as much as I should. It’s one of the worst thing of not living in Manchester anymore.
Do you think Manchester City can finally win the Champions League?
- I like Guardiola, it’s time for him to win something, but I like him. He’s cool, he’s a thinker, he doesn’t play defense like Mourinho. He has now understood that English football ain’t easy, but shit mate, England is not an easy place for anybody, whatever your job is.
If you were a footballer, instead of a Rockstar, who would you have liked to be like?
- Many City fans won’t like that, but who gives a fuck, I would have been like Eric Cantona, he was powerful, he was an asshole, he knew how to play football, and he didn’t give a shit about anything and anyone. Like Liam Gallagher.
Did you teach your kids how to play guitar?
- I leave them alone, I don’t teach anything to anyone. I let them do what they want to do, I know they like other stuff now, music with not much guitars on it: grime, hip hop. But I get it, if I were a kid today I wouldn’t know what to listen to. I’ve been listening to The Sex Pistols for days.
Can you picture your kids, Lennon and Gene, together in a band one day?
- Lennon seems more interested in being a model, but it would be amazing, mate. The world needs another band with other Gallagher brothers in it. To adjust what went bad in the past.
What kind of mistakes would you tell them not to make?
- Are you kidding? I’d tell me to make as many mistakes as they can! I wouldn’t be what I am today without all the mistakes I made. And I wouldn’t have had so much fun.
I apologize for any mistakes, but Liam says it's ok to make them
