LAS VEGAS (AP) - Shane Mosley is looking for a new trainer after firing his father.
Mosley said Monday he and his father are severing their professional association that began when Jack Mosley first took his son to a gym to learn to box as an 8-year-old.
The decision comes in the wake of Mosley's March 13 loss to Winky Wright that cost him his 154-pound titles. Mosley said he was dehydrated for the fight and not able to do the things he thought he could do in the ring.
"I am going to miss working with my father," Mosley said in a statement released Monday. "Together, we scaled many mountains, and I would never have had the success I have had if he had not been there to guide and teach me every step of the way. He is, without question, one of the all-time great trainers. More importantly, he has been a great father who I love very much."
Mosley said he has not found a new trainer yet, but wants one as part of an overhaul of his career.
Jack Mosley said he understands his son's decision and that "part of being a good parent is knowing when to let your children go."
