Arsene Wenger was appointed Arsenal manager in September 1996. I was only 8 years old at the time, and my own obsession with the club was only just beginning - like millions of other fans, I only know Arsenal with Wenger at the helm. Arsene Wenger is synonymous with Arsenal Football Club. Wenger transformed the club and English football upon his arrival by eliminating the drinking culture, changing players’ diets, and altering training regimens. By doing so he was able to develop unknown players and transform them into being world class (Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas...). Wenger won the league in his first full season by securing the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1997/98, and achieved a second double in 2001/02 before winning the league undefeated with The Invincibles in 2003/04. He has also won more FA Cups than any other manager, with 7 total. He also guided the club to their only ever Champions League Final which unfortunately ended as a loss. But it wasn’t just winning silverware that was admired, but also how it was achieved: with power, pace, and flair, Wenger’s teams played with comprehensive style and attractive offensive football. Wenger also oversaw the move from Highbury to the Emirates stadium and kept the club competitive during the austerity surrounding the move, which was even more impressive as Roman Abramovich pumped billions into Chelsea. During this period, Arsenal were trophyless for nine years until a run of 3 FA Cups in 4 years beginning in 2014 brought some success back to Arsenal. Up until last season (when we finished 5th) we also always finished within the top 4, securing two consecutive decades of Champions League football, a consistency not matched by any other team in the league. With his appointment in 1996 it was common to ask, “Arsene Who?”, but 22 years later the question had been emphatically answered. Thanks for the memories, Arsene. It is hard to say goodbye. I’m quoting this so it’s on the new page. 😭

Nick Hornby has made a career in capturing the obsessive and emotive fans like myself, from music to football and Arsenal to Oasis. 😔

I’ve been saying it all season that I didn’t see him being our manager come next season. Odd timing though on the eve of a massive Semu Final? I am 100% convinced that Brendan Rodgers will be our next manager.
Thanks for the memories, Arsene. terrible replacement. the guy just rides off of previous managers' hard work. problem is, i cant see anyone that would be a good replacement actually taking the job. theres more to being an arsenal manager than just throwing money at the team, and that wont change when arsene is gone. any solid replacement wont put up with clubs monetary restrictions...so yeah, i can actually see rodgers as the next man in charge. then i can see arsenal dropping out of european contention altogether. i give it a season before the 'fans' are all begging for the return of arsene. the likes of ancelotti will never agree to terms. my pick for the best of both worlds (good manager & sensible spending): jogi löw. so long arsene. thanks for the memories...

When I play Football Manager 2018, I am like Arsene Wenger. I don’t know when to quit. #BeadyIn The timing of this post (April 17th) turned out to quite eerie. Wow. I still can’t believe it. It all feels so fucking surreal.

Lets not forget that while AW only won the league 3 times, we did come close on many occasions and probably should have done better - especially in contemporary times:
We lost the league by 1 pt in 1998/99
We threw 2002/03 away.
In 2007/08 we crumbled after Eduardo got injured, lost League by 5 pts
In 2013/14 we topped the table for 4 months and then collapsed in March.
And we really should have done better in 2015/16 when Leicester somehow managed to do it? Still have no idea how.
Not saying we should have won all 5 of those, but those are the 5 we have to choose from.

The Arsenal vs. West Ham match is on at 5.30am Sunday here on the West Coast. Before Wenger’s announcement, I wasn’t going to watch. But with it being his penultimate home game, I want to do my part even from thousands of miles away. I will be standing up and singing “One Arsene Wenger” in front of the TV for one of the last times ever. Total respect for the man.

A lot of money being laid on Carlo... I'm not convinced it will happen.
On Sunday there was lots of whispers about Vieira returning.
We shall see.
In other news Madrid away is all booked up and tickets bought. Bring it on!

Arsenal should get Hradecky instead of Leno. £25 vs. free agent this summer and they're both about the same level.
Oh and Leno injured his knee just recently...
But it looks like Hradecky is moving to either Dortmund or Leverkusen because he commented "I dont care about the city, I don't care about warm beaches. As long as there is good beer it's enough for me." Typical Finn😂😂
Leverkusen would be a big disappointment though. Moving to Dortmund would be nice.

That was the most ridiculous match I have ever seen. Ref was a joke throughout. Mustafi was a twat. I’m tired of this second choice keeper nonsense. We wasted chance after chance. Wenger made zero subs. And now we are practically out of the tie. Fuck this shit.

I’m sorry, but Cech saves that shot.
Fuck AW if he starts Ospina on Thursday (and he will). Asinine decision not to play your strongest team in a massive match.

I wonder what Atletico’s strategy will be? You can bang on about their defensive record but I don’t think parking the bus is wise when all we need is one goal.
I reckon they will counter attack because if they score then the tie is effectively over.
Also, they really should start Diego Costa. The thug is our new Drogba.

I can only catch Arsenal’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Atlético Madrid on tape delay tomorrow night. We need to score at least one to reach the final.
!!!! WE’RE GONNA DO THIS !!!!

Well that was fucking diabolical.
Ozil and Welbeck were shocking over the entire 180 minutes. It’s like Ozil has given up since AW announced he’s leaving. Pathetic. I hate these bunch of underachievers. We deserved noting from tonight, and that’s exactly what we got. Xhaka was our best player, which says it all. Chambers did well too to be fair. What mugs. Au revoir.

I have no animosity with Arsene Wenger. If I run into the man, I’d buy him a baguette and offer him some escargot. It would be the right thing to do.

For 22 years, Arsene Wenger carried himself and Arsenal with dignity and class. With Wenger at the helm, Arsenal were always managed the right way both on and off the pitch. A great send off from the Emirates faithful this afternoon. I will miss you, gaffer. Total respect. #OneArseneWenger #MerciArsene

I can’t wait until our first home match of the season in August - Arsene Wenger will no doubt be in the stands. ‘One Arsene Wenger’ will emanate around the stadium and it will be equally emotional. Total class.

Towards the end of the game, our away fans were chanting ‘One Arsene Wenger...’ and the Leicester fans stood up joined in and applauded. It was absolute class to see. Total respect, Leicester.
