Is it?
I only ask because I am very much a die-hard Oasis/Liam/Beady Eye/Noel fan but to me Definitely Maybe sounds boring, sounds like an obvious starting point and an album that needs producing again. In my mind three songs shouldn't be on the album, half of it sounds like it needs to be rerecorded and, on the whole, it sounds almost boring to me.
I've always preferred several albums to it and I've always felt like I am on my own as whenever people comment on the best Oasis albums, they always say it's either Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory. Morning Glory to me sounds like an almost different band now

"Is it sacrilege as an Oasis fan to dislike Definitely Maybe?" If you don't like it, you don't like it Forget what anyone else thinks* I probably only listen to DM and WTSMG a few times each a year, in comparison to SOTSOG and BHN which I listen to a lot more (along with their respective demos/B-sides/etc.). If people think that's bad form for an Oasis fan, then that's their issue not mine. *I'm avoiding quoting the opening line from Supersonic. Too easy

Pepper is clearly the most overrated album in history, right? I'm down with acknowledging it's importance to the art of music recording (stereo, loops, and such)... but as an album it's got nothing in comparison to other Beatles work.

more people like morning glory than definitely maybe so you're not wrong.
i prefer definitely maybe but their latest stuff is more polished and more set in stone so i get why people don't exactly like it.

I personally dont get the opinion that DM is one of the greatest albums / Debuts of all time.
In my opinion Rock n Roll Star / Live Forever / Supersonic / Slide Away are four of the greatest songs of the 90s
Bring it in Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol & Digsy are pretty damn great.
But Shakermaker, Up in the Sky, Columbia and Married with Children are and always have been just "Meh" to me.
Its for this reason I have never understood the unanimous praise. Dont get me wrong, I Think the album is Great, and I love the fact that its Dirty Sounding / Punkish / Full of Energy. Unlike any other Oasis album.
Now for me... From the Release of the B-Sides on Cigarettes & Alcohol, Through Whatever and Whats the Story, All the way through to the end of Come on feel the Noize... Peaking at Knebworth and that first listen of DYKWIM on Top of the Pops. THAT is the greatest period of any musical Era ive experienced in my life.
And it humbly and respectfully towers over Definitley Maybe.
Peace.

Some boys like boys more than girls.
Which is fine.
I mean, I can't imagine myself in that position.
But...you know...whatever makes you happy.

IMO you are not an Oasis fan unless you love Definitely Maybe.
it's the soul, the guts, the spirit, the sound of this band.
They made such an amazing debut album that it was pretty much impossible to live up to. I personally have always found "Morning Glory" to be a massive disappointment because in 1995 when it came out i thought it was soft as hell. The 2 best tracks on it, "Some Might Say" and "Morning Glory" both had McCarroll on them and both sounded like DM-era Oasis.
Some of you never saw Oasis live in 1994 but IF you did you will know what this band was really about. DM representing everything Oasis. I saw them many times after that but after 1996 they had already lost the ORIGINAL Oasis attitude. That 1994 to early 1995 attitude was so blistering, immediate, and bold that there was no other band i've ever seen (i've seen 100s and 100s of bands in my life) that compared. DM captured that spirit.....

This is all opinion of course but Definitely Maybe IS Oasis, that is the sound I fell in love with and the sound I love today
Perfect mix of the Stones, Beatles, Pistols and the Who, fucking perfect
Everything else is insignificant

Definitely Maybe is my favourite Oasis album... with (What's The Story) Morning Glory? ! I consider 1994-1996 as a whole same thing. I never understood how you can love DM and dismiss MG. For me, it's the same thing. Most of the songs on MG were written even before DM came out. The latter might sound rawer but songwriting wise, both are pretty much equally as good.

It's just softer...doesn't have that "come on!!!" attitude that DM has. The songs are from pre-DM days but i feel like there was a reason they didn't fit onto DM----barring Some Might Say and MG that is...

Hello, Roll With It, Hey Now, She's Electric and Morning Glory could have been Tony's witout any doubt
but the big singles (wonderwall, dlbia, supernova) needed some else than Tony, I guess... but who knows
and Noel wanted away from that raw sound

Columbia is one of their best songs, I can't even explain how great it is. Married With Children is great soft ending for the album. Great chord progression, lovely melody and funny lyrics.

Are you allowed to say that? To elaborate, I don't think an album worthy of the "greatest album of all time discussion" is allowed to have more than one filler track. In my opinion, Sgt. Peppers disqualifies itself from the discussion with tracks like Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite, Lovely Rita and Good Morning Good Morning. They're not particularly bad, but they manage to keep Sgt. Peppers from being a flawless masterpiece.

As an Oasis fan it's hard to believe one would dislike DM - their most prominent songs are on it. Unless you hate Rock music, there's no reason people can dislike DM I believe - it's a perfect blend of youth anthems, british punk/angst and some of the greatest slab of guitar riffs and melodies ever graced on record.
DM vs WTSMG will always be a proper debate: indie rock perfection vs transcendent pop perfection. I'm in the DM camp but WTSMG one of the greatest albums ever without a doubt! Morning Glory is incredible (the song, listened to it working out the other day). There's something about it that never grows old - whether it be the crushing layers of guitar static or Liam's epic vocal delivery.

Yes.
DM is by far their best album. And it defines Oasis. Almost a quarter century later, it is still mega.

And Married With Children is the perfect sweet ending to the whirlwind of tunes that came before it. DM is almost a concept album. It's brilliant. Lads out on the town proper having it.
