Woah, I thought I'd seen all the Oasis TV performances, but I was never aware of this one! Cool find.

They played that song because Noel really loved it. Should have done a shorter Stand By Me or Be Here Now.

Because Oasis didn't give a fuck! Hell, they opened with 2 b-sides on their Morning Glory tour...

One of the stranger SNL tidbits I can remember...the audio of this is on a best-of-SNL compilation CD. Volume 2, I think. And yet whenever they have re-aired this episode over the years, they've only shown Don't Go Away. To my knowledge, it's only aired once on American TV, and yet it was on an all-time best-of-SNL compilation album.
Always struck me as weird.

Could've been because the TV producers wanted a shorter song. They had to chop up Don't Go Away on all those shows and Noel probably couldn't be arsed to work out ways to cut the rest of Be Here Now's songs in half.

Could it be related to the release of The Masterplan? Acquiesce was a promo single for the album and they also released a promo video for the song (live in G-Mex). I'd imagine playing the song was intentional and not just a random choice. If memory serves me right The Masterplan was pretty much aimed for the people outside the UK who couldn't get the singles in their hands so easily so the American audiences were definitely their target audience.

The Masterplan compilation wasn't even a concept at that point in time. Didn't even come out for 13 months after that SNL spot.

Plenty of artists play talk shows and SNL with longer songs. Around 5 min. Oasis could easily have played Be Here Now or Stand By Me.

Musical acts normally play two songs on SNL. They played "Don't Go Away" and "Acquiesce" that night. Since it was in '98, I assume they played "Acquiesce" to promote 'The Masterplan'.

That SNL is from October 1997. Around the time of their Hammerstein ballroom gigs. Masterplan wasn't even an idea at this point. That was a full year away.

That's because SNL reruns are normally cut down from 90 minutes to 60. But funnily enough, I have that compilation on CD! Bought it at HMV or Tower Records when it came out… and have both volumes! Talk about a throwback, especially as SNL just celebrated its 40th anniversary.

No wonder Liam's voice got rough. Man he's really screaming over those guitars. I think Noel got a kick out of trying to drown him out sometimes.
