On this thread, you can write about your biggest musical shocks (positive shocks, obviously !). It may be a song, an album or a specific band.
I start first.
Oasis:
I think I was 15 when I first heard "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger". It was a time when I was only listening to classic bands/artists (Beatles, Stones, Bowie) and, even I loved both songs, I hadn't tried to discover the rest of the band at the time.
It's only a year later that I will feally discover Oasis. I still remember it like it was yesterday. The first song was "Supersonic"... 4 minutes and half later, I was blown away ! Everything sounded like nothing I've heard before and was unreal: the drums intro, Liam's vocals, the melody and that guitar outro ! I must have put repeat 15 times. It was like dope.
All classics followed: Live Forever, Whatever, Some Might Say, Rock'n'Roll Star, The Masterplan, Listen Up, Champagne Supernova, Acquiesce, Cigarettes and Alcohol, etc. What was amazing was that every song was (almost) as perfect than the one before. All were so addictive and the perfect match: gorgeous melodies from Noel Gallagher mixed with a big wall of guitars and Liam's incisive vocals. For months, I was almost only listening to Oasis. It was like the imaginery world I could go to anytime. The band gave me the desire to learn guitar, to write songs, to sing. It changed. It'll always be MY band.
Belle and Sebastian:
It's winter, I'm looking for new music and then, while I'm reading some musical recommandations on a french webstie. There is one that grabs my attention: a comment on a scottish band named "Belle and Sebastian". It says that "it's a pop folk band, full of beautiful songs mixed with strings and horns". Pretty promising, innit ? The first song I listen is called "Expections". It's actually better than what I was expecting, despite the weird voice of the singer (I thought to be a woman at first !). After that very good first impression, I go borrow their first 3 albums: Tigermilk, If You're Feeling Sinister and The Boy With The Arab Strap.
When I finish my listen, I'm very surpprised. I can't believe what I just heard... it's like someone puts to music all my favourite landscapes from my region. The melodies are gorgeous, the arrangements delicate, and the whole thing makes you feel great. Their perfect song comes in the track 2 of The Boy With The Arab Strap": Sleep The Clock Around: 4 chords repeating over and over, that you wish never ends. One of my favourite songs ever.
The La's:
I read an interview from Noel when he talks highly about the band. I make some researchs on spotify and find one of their songs, "There She Goes". The song blows me away. The melody is perfect, it sounds like an unknown treasure from the 60's. I might have played the song 20 times in a row without getting tired of it (which is still the case today). I borrow their only album, "The La's" and I'm blown away again. Full of life, melodies, this album even gets better with the time. Timeless Melody, Son of A Gun, Doledrum, the album is full of great songs. A pop masterpiece, underrated in my opinion. It's very high in my personal favourites.
To be continued, later...
