Two fantastic bands. Led Zeppelin just edges it for me though, every band member is just completely amazing at their instrument.

It's Led Zeppelin for me, simply because I think their greatest songs are slightly better than the Who's greatest songs.

The Who never came close to the output that Zeppelin did. They use to call their fans the ocean because they went on for miles and miles at gigs.

Zeppelin IV is a near perfect album. I still hear all 8 tracks on modern radio today. Very rare for an album.

I recommend all fans to read "Hammer of The Gods". That book will knock your socks off. The band members hate it because it's probably accurate as hell. A lot of darkness in those pages but also tremendous glory.

I love The Who but Led Zep edges it for me.
Both bands are actually very talented. Robert Plant vs. Roger Daltrey, Jimmy Page vs. Pete Townshend, John Paul Jones vs. John Entwistle, John Bonham vs. Keith Moon. Fucking great musicians all of 'em.

I like Led Zeppelin's best songs better than the Who's best songs, but overall I definitely listen to the Who a whole lot more, and only to about what, 10 Led Zeppelin songs max.? So definitely the Who for me.

Plus for me John Entwistle is the best rock bassist. Well in my opinion Roger Daltrey has a better voice than Robert Plant but apart from that I think it's fairly obvious that Jimmy Page is a far better guitarist (and songwriter) than Pete Townshend, John Paul Jones and John Entwistle are pretty close when it comes to bass but JPJ can play loads more instruments and adds more to the songs for example Fool in the Rain. Keith Moon is a great drummer but has the misfortune in this instance of being compared to John Bonham who, in my opinion, is by far the greatest drummer of all time. LZ were just far more consistent with their output than the Who ever where. Who's Next, Tommy and My Generation are all great albums but aside from that they only had the odd single or track on their albums that could be considered 'great'. Led Zeppelin on the other hand had Led Zeppelin II,III,IV, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti which are all complete classics all the way through plus all of their other albums had at least 3 great songs on them.

Never got into both bands really. Particularly Led Zep - all that nonsense about dragons, wizards and that? Not for me. For me, it's The Who. Baba O Reilly for that intro alone. And stadiums were built for Won't Get Fooled Again.

I downloaded Led Zep IV from a flatmate years ago - said it was the best one to try out for new listeners. Could not get into it at all - there wasn't any eureka moment for me. I'll admit they are a technically exceptional band (probably the best there ever is), but their music never moved me and has always left me cold.

I've gotta be honest if you don't like LZ IV then you probably won't like any of their discography.

That is their best album and every track is a classic rock staple for 40 years strong. Like others said, if you don't like that, Zep is not for you.

I get what you're saying, but I struggle to remember any Led Zeppelin song with a dragon in it Sure, there are a few songs with Lord of the Rings-references in them, but I don't think that is reflected in the sound of the songs. But I guess that depends on how you define "dragons and wizards-music". I'm thinking more of bands like Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden when I come across that term. Have you heard any of their more "bluesier" tracks? Guaranteed dragon-free

Not the biggest fan of both. I like them but they're not up there with my favourite bands ever. I think I prefer Led Zep a bit though (Led Zeppelin IV is better than anything from The Who imo) but The Who had definitely some very good tracks in the 60's.

History doesn't make it obvious but it took the Stones until the early 80s to escape the shadows of The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Toe to toe in the 60s and The Beatles grabbed the sales, tickets and headlines. Same for Zep in 70s vs the Stones. Those two bands also went out on top.

Zep IV is the one I never listen to, bar Misty Mountain Hop and Rock N Roll. Maybe due to over saturation during that era. Much more into III and Physical Graffiti. For me regarding technical prowess, the better band. Yes, they were the Beatles of the seventies.
As for a vote. The Who all day long. That stuff still gets me pumped up.

Well, both bands are pretty brilliant. Some of the best bands the UK has produced, and rightfully so. Led Zep would be technically more proficent and better musicians but for me there is no greater live record than The Who Live at Leeds. There is also no rock documentary better than Kids are Alright, at least its the definite standard. So I'd say The Who.
That said, the Who also had their share of negligible releases. Big songs like Squeeze Box that are just utterly hopeless. But 60s Who through to the end of Keith Moon was just remarkably exhilarating.

All you need to know, Led Zeppelin band member dies. Band over. The Who.......band goes on. I saw The Who at MSG on their "farewell tour" in 2002. They still tour till this very day.

Not sure how The Who are "winning" this thing. Zeppelin had more masterpiece albums.

Not sure how The Who are "winning" this thing. Zeppelin had more masterpiece albums. Because it's an opinion poll. I like the best Who songs more than the best Zeppelin songs, although both are great. I listen to the Who more. Therefore I voted for them. Also I know this moment isn't them in their prime because no Moon, but last Entwistle US performance and great moment!

To me, Entwistle revolutionized the bass as an instrument and added more to the songs. But that could be bias, because he is my favorite bass guitarist. As for lead guitarists, I would say that Page is better than Pete, but songwriting is all down to taste. It's an interesting conversation.
