First saw the mighty J. Geils Band on 15 Dec 1978 at Cobo Hall Detroit. I was 14. They were the ultimate party band back in the day. So funky with super hard driving R&B chops. The East Detroit High school marching band came out and lined the front of the stage, as they marched off, Geils was on stage roaring into their set.
Most people do remember Centerfold late 1981. Diehards were disappointed with that album. In fairness, they probably deserved to make some money, but our J. Geils on MTV, what BS. Though their commercial peak, it was the beginning of the end. The older hard driving stuff is much more representative of what they were all about.
This was the band you put on at a party, getting a little buzzed, and trying to make out. Got lots of airplay back before corporate radio playlists. For sure a killer live band. For sure a band of their era.
RIP J. Geils much respect.
