Im a big kasabian fan like many of you on here however it shocked me on how hated this album is on this forum. Its one of kasabians finest efforts imo. Not quite as good as west rider or velociraptor however still a very solid album standout tracks like empire, shoot the runner, last trip, stuntman, british leigion and dobleman are brilliant. There are a few tracks im not too bothered about like me plus one, seek and destroy (eventhough I really like the "all I have now is being here with you line) and kasabians version of the meaning of soul - apnoea.
Anyhoo, Very interested in seeing if there are other fans of this album out there or I will get my balls chopped off for this thread

Anyhoo, Very interested in seeing if there are other fans of this album out there or I will get my balls chopped off for this thread I adore this album, it is one of my all time favorites, desert island, ... you name it! It was love at first listen, after having fallen for its title song, that still is my favorite Kasabian song. Also, it was the album that got me into Kasabian. But even before that, when it was just that album and me, every time I listened to it I was astounded by how much I enjoyed it, as it was not exactly my kind of music, then. It is most certainly now! I never cut it short, I always have and had to listen to it all because for me it has a "togetherness", an overall fit and flow of the tracks like none other by Kasabian, one - to me - brilliant entity, not just a collection of fine songs. Therefore, there is not one song I do not enjoy and the album never leaves me unaffected. When I got into the Kasabian fandom, I was also astounded that most do not rate it very highly. But in a way, if that was even possible, it made me treasure it even more.

Empire's a great song, but after that it drops like a broken lift.

With this second album they got into a "stadium band" mode. No offence to OP because I've been their fan since 2004, saw them for 9 times in 3 countries and met them in person several times. To me their best work was/is their debut album and "West Ryder..." was their peak. Since 2011 I don't even follow their albums. Sure they're great live, but they bore me these days.

Very true, you can tell that theyve peaked and are going through the "retread the greatest hits at shows" phase to stay big. However I cant say its any different to how I felt about oasis after 10 years or so

Velociraptor is by far their best album. No question.
All their other albums are hit and miss.
Saw them live once in DC several years ago.
Never fulfilled their promise. New Oasis? No chance.

Was a while since I listened to it in its entirety, so I decided to do it again today. It may not be as bad as many think it is, but from "Apnoea" until the second last track (The Doberman is ok) it's either meh/uninspiring or just mediocre stuff. The five first tracks save the album from the "shit label" though imo, but they would have been better off having made an EP instead with just those songs.

Ehhhhhhhh..................
One or two tracks worth a damn. The rest forgettable. A weak sophomore effort.

I hate how lazy are bands today. I don´t mind albums like Empire but only if we get album like that every year or maybe in two years.
Like Beatles at the begining, there was two albums every year, not all of them were 10/10 but you get few nice songs and few fillers but very soon you get another album with some new hit songs. Writing pop song is not is really not that hard, especcially if you are talented songwriter and you have good band.
So, it would be much easier to look at Empire as solid album if we had new album next year and then look at Empire as some transition phase. They recorded only 5 albums in 13 years(first 13 years, time when bands are most productive) and then you don´t have too much material and you analyze every album more than you probably should and you can see every fault.

The departure of Chris Karloff definitely impacted the band.
