I saw a interview earlier with Liam Gallagher saying that he disregards Oasis ever being in the britpop movement. What's your thoughts, yes or no?

Oasis sound was different from rest of the Britpop bands such as Blur, Pulp, and Suede. Oasis had lots of distortion on their guitars, while other bands had pop music and pop melodies. Oasis added pop melodies over rock msuic, which was a new sound back then, so it was almost like a new genre (not Britpop). Since Oasis was the biggest band during the Britpop era, I think they are known as a Britpop band.

I don't like these clasifications. It doesn't truly tell you what's the soul of a band.
For example, Oasis musical influences are way more complex than most non fans will admit. The Sex Pistols, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, T. Rex, The La's, The Rolling Stones, Slade, The Beatles, Neil Young, Bee Gees (early), the shoegaze scene are all important inspirations for 90's Oasis.
All of this mixed together gave us an unique band: Oasis.

This might sound weird, but I don't see Oasis as a Britpop band; however, I think it was an important band for the Britpop scene at the time. Does it make sense? I really hope so.

Yes. Maybe Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory aren't very representative of 90's Britpop but Be Here Now and certain songs like Roll With It certainly are

They were part of the Britpop movement but their songs didn't sound like typical Britpop (Blur, Pulp, etc).

Britpop means fuck-all at the best of times, but if you say Oasis weren't a Britpop band then you make the term utterly empty. To me, it just means the minor explosion of British pop and musical culture from 1994-1997, years defined by Oasis.
So, yeah.

I agree with Liam. In terms of sound Oasis was a rock and roll band and sounded different to the other so-called Britpop bands. For example, the others had dance songs. Oasis had none.
Nevertheless, the concept of Britpop is broader than the music style of the bands that were part of it, and that is why Oasis will be remember as part of the movement.

I broke the tie!
Oasis defines Britpop much in the same way Nirvana defines Grunge.

This thread reminds me of the time when I told to a friend of mine that I was into britpop music and he thought that I was a huge fan of Take That and Robbie Williams.
Weird stuff.

You should have lent him a copy of (What's The Story) Morning Glory? . That reminds me of the day when I told to my father I was a fan of The La's and after he listened to "There She Goes", he told me "it's shit. It sounds like a boy band". Needless to say I was quite pissed off after this

Was Oasis a Britpop band? Oasis was THE Britpop band. This is EXACTLY what I was about to post right now, but then saw someone else already did it.

No. Britpop doesn't actually exist, it was a media invention. Oasis were the best British rock n roll band of the 1990's.

Almost every Britpop band these days don't want to admit they were ever part of Britpop, they all seemed happy to be part of it back in the day though, and that includes Oasis.

I never ever thought of them as Britpop.
Britpop to me was Space, Supergrass, Dodgy and co.
Oasis had much more depth.
