Mentioned Kanye's Ultralight Beam; massive production and excellent vocal contributions from everyone involved, nothing else really came close. Came out really early in the year too, so everything else had to live up to that one song's standards, nothing did.
Honourable mention to the legendary Swedish alt-rock band Kent who this year orchestrated their own burial and released their last album this spring, culminating in a final tour ending with three consecutive sold-out arena concerts in Stockholm.
This is a live version of the aptly titled "Den sista sången" (which translates into "The Last Song") closing track from that album, set to video clips from the tour together with some fans expressing their love for the band.
It's far from their best song, but it really has meant everything to me these last few weeks.

I also looked them a bit and now I'm intrigued, since they seem like the Oasis of Sweden and have some cool influences (like MBV). What would you say are some of their best songs?

Good music came out in 2016? That's news to me! Plenty of good and great music came out in 2016 and it's been a great music year for me this year again. Hopefully next year will be same or even better. My best song released in 2016 is: Ether - Mogwai

Play it out, for me. Certainly the song I came back for most.

Actually Radiohead's 'Burn The Witch' was a fantastic song to be fair, I thought the rest of the album was poor though.

Thanks.

There's a lot to discover since they've covered many genres. I'm partial to their 2007-09 techno-influenced rock era but their commercial peak was around 2002-05. This is a live staple and another epic album closer from 1997, about two lovers leaving everything behind to go on a journey together, only to die in a plane crash. Beautifully arranged with a recurring guitar line and synth motifs, and no actual chorus. Arguably very Radiohead-influenced. One of their biggest hits from 2000, a groovy dance-rock number (one could easily imagine Franz Ferdinand doing something similar), the title being borrowed from a certain Kraftwerk song. Heavily processed beats with an immense synth-bass hook. If you listen closely you can hear some real punchy slap-bass in the chorus, released in 2009. Excellent opener from their best selling album Vapen & Ammunition (2002), if you're supposed to start anywhere, start here. Pretty much all of the songs are single material, slower ballads and faster rock tracks alike. One of their best songs from one of their worst albums; a hazy, yet intense mid-tempo rocker, with a driving rhythm and sparse production.

Probably not the best, but I love this:
I'm also secretly a bit of a the Weeknd fan (ok, not so secretly and not as much a fan as that I've been enjoying a few of his songs), so I liked Starboy a lot, I liked Daydreaming and Burn The With by Radiohead, liked a couple of songs on Bowie's album, I liked Aviation and Miracle Aligner by the Last Shadow Puppets and otherwise I'm having a hard time remembering what came out last year and if I liked anything else at all.

Just 1 song?
Iggy Pop - Gardenia
(followed by Travis - What Will Come, which is maybe not the best of the year but a personal favourite for sure)

I've finally put down a list of my favorite songs from 2016. Needless to say, this forum is always a fantastic place to discover new artists and bands, so please keep posting interesting stuff! After a lot of thinking, I've chosen 'Long Holiday' by Flyying Colours as my absolute favorite song released this year. They're a young shoegaze band from Australia and they put out their first album (which is brilliant) in September. Check them out if you love melodic guitars and hazy moods! And now from 2nd to 5th place (with links to YT videos): 2. Holy Holy - 'Elevator': love the heavenly guitars in this one, these guys are wizards. Fantastic tune. 3. The Dandy Warhols - 'STYGGO': groovy, light-hearted and addictive. 4. Hammock - 'Dissonance': a wonderfully emotional track which mixes ambient, shoegaze and post-rock genres. 5. Mogwai - 'U-235': the whole album is excellent but the dark synths in this one get me every time. As a bonus, here are some very honorable mentions (couldn't be arsed to put them in order ) Man Made - 'Bring Some' (but the whole album is excellent) Minor Victories - 'Breaking My Light' (another very good album from this year) Radiohead - 'Glass Eyes' (surprisingly my most listened track from AMSP. It feels so sincere and vulnerable) Richard Ashcroft - 'They Don't Own Me' (it may well be Richard on autopilot but this one is a good one) Lush - 'Out of Control' (sadly they disbanded - again! A shame, this track was incredibly promising) Blossoms - 'Charlemagne' (their debut album is slightly above average but Charlemagne is a tune!) Hazel English -'It's Not Real' (dream pop at its best. Her first EP is wonderful) The Wind + The Wave - 'The Redhead in Aberdeen' (their debut album felt more inspired, but this is great!) She Makes War - 'Stargazing' (Laura Kidd is a singer-songwriter from England who deserves a lot more appreciation!) Young in the City - 'Wayhome' (I discovered them a couple of weeks ago and everything they've released so far is gorgeous)

carlober you've picked my interest in that band "Flyying Colours". Never heard of them, I'm gonna take a listen. Sounds promising. There are some bands I don't know in your honourable mention list, so I'm gonna listen to these, aswell. Also, no Bowie tracks ? You don't dig the album "Blackstar" ?
