Weller, hands down. Marr's the better guitarist, but Weller has the songs and the voice.

Weller could be the greatest British songwriter ever so yeah, Weller. no doubt about it, weller is one of the greats, but that is quite a statement you made there. Most of the greatest songwriters ARE British, so considering Weller to be the greatest might cause a little debate. I honestly can't think of a great American songwriter right now. Maybe Izzy Stradlin? 😅

Seriously? The list would be endless! All the blues, country, jazz, rock'n'roll and soul stuff, the Great Songbook, giants like Dylan, Zappa and Waits... It would take me ages to name them all!

As for the poll, Marr's contribution to music and guitar playing is enormous, but clearly Weller is the better and most significant songwriting and artist. The guy is just incredible.

Is this a list of all the people you think are better songwriters than Weller, or just of good ones that aren't British? Because if it's the former...Brandon Flowers better than Paul Weller? Nah, I'm not having that.

Yeah I couldn't think of one at the moment because I was like falling asleep. But really, except for writers like Bruce Springsteen and Johny Cash, I would debate on whether they're one of the greatest writers of all time. Maybe I'm biased, but I think people like Prince are not the greatest writers. But what Americans are good at is composing and rearranging classical music. Like modern classical.

I honeslty should be ashamed because I didn't remember Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan. Oh yeah I love Dave Grohl too, but I don't think he is one of the greatest. People like him are like right above of Izzy Stradlin

As a solo artist and songwriter, Weller is in a different league to Marr. Its not even close. Weller has written so many classics throughout his career and he had a superb voice. Marr can't sing very well at all... But if we include Marr's songwriting in the smiths ( and i will do because he wrote the music on his own) then i vote for Marr..his smiths work is a masterclass in rhythm guitar playing ( but its much more than just rhythm playing) I have been playing guitar all my life and have learned the works of many great guitarists - page, Squire, butler, coxon, grunge artists, rock bands etc solos and all - and marr is the most difficult to master. Not only is his playing intricate and fast it is beautiful on the ears. Every smiths song is a layered musical masterpiece. Marrs guitar spoke to me more than morrisseys words did. So as much as i love Weller - Marr wins this for me for his playing and songwriting in the smiths..

The greatest British songwriter ever? Pfff. Don't be daft. If you're referring to tomlivesforever's post, he said Weller could be the greatest British songwriter ever. Not that he definitely is. I took that to mean Weller has the potential to be, because of his constant changing it up, still being great long after his 'peak' form has expired, etc. If that is what tom was saying, I can see where he's coming from. If not, no, I don't agree either. But still, the man has racked up a mightily impressive back catalogue now. And the form he's been on since he turned 50... Puts our Noel to shame, that's for sure.

Many people find him to be a great songwriter and not a great guitarist. I think he is an underrated guitarist, but I don't like his songs a lot. I honestly don't get why purple rain is so famous. I think the melody could be so much better, something like the chorus of Black Hole Sun. I guess he is a great songwriter in the sense of composing music structure and making guitar riffs. But I wouldn't say he is one of the greatest melody writers.
