I'm currently in the process of reading Oasis: What's the Story? by Iain Robertson and just came across the story of their Barrowlands gig in 94. Having conquered close to 100 shows at this point of the year in 94 with, of course, the heavy partying each night, it took its toll on Liam's voice. After struggling through the first three songs, Liam angrily threw the mic and stand into the security pit midway through Digsy's Dinner and was off. Noel then told the 2,000 on hand, "Hang on a minute, I'll sort something out," and went to the back to find Liam. Noel and tour manager Iain Robertson tried to reason with Liam to get back on stage, but Liam's voice was strangled and he couldn't sing another note. Everyone ultimately knew what best for him was a bit of medicine and sleep - lots of it. This left Noel to saunter back on stage to finish the set without Liam for the first time, while Liam was off to the hotel to get some well-needed kip. A humorous part of the story is that once Noel went back on stage, he looked a bit uneasy as he wasn't used to being the center of attention for prolonged periods of time at this point in his music career. Iain saw this so went up to Noel and whispered, "I think we should do a runner... we can be out of here before they even know we're gone!" Funnily enough, Iain didn't realize he was directly next to Noel's mic and some of the not-so-amused members of the audience were able to pick up on this exchange. Noel shot him the, "Well done, good and faithful idiot!" look and soldiered on. He finished the show on his own with a rumored 7-song acoustic set, even debuting the song Whatever to the crowd two weeks before it's single release before the rest of the band joined him on stage for the last few songs. I've searched online for a setlist or any recordings of the show but have sadly come up empty. I did, however, find this excerpt from the book Oasis: Definitely Maybe. Here We Are But There We Were by Andy Reilly which shed a good light on the night from the perspective of a spectator in the crowd that night. I've always been a fan of listening to recordings of Noel taking over for Liam on the nights his voice went bust (Chicago 96 and Dublin 97 come to mind). This is a big part of the history of Oasis and it's a damn shame no recordings of the first time this happened doesn't exist. It would be quite interesting to hear Noel's take on songs like Columbia, Bring It On Down, Married With Children or I Am The Walrus back in 94!

I've gone and done a quick look through the film. Unless I've missed something, there wasn't footage of this in the film.

Nice bit of research digging around in the archives guys - well done!
The earliest Noel-taking-over gig I know of is Grand Rapids Orbit Ballroom, Michigan in April (or March?) 1995.

I've scoured through the film before and after the bit where they're in Japan and couldn't find what you're talking about above. Do you have a timestamp from the DVD? This will make it much easier to find. Thanks in advance

The quality is incredible. There must be a tape of this gig kicking about somewhere. There must be loads just like this one just catching dust somewhere never seeing the light of day. Wish there a way to get some of these more obscure gigs released.
