As being a music lover myself, I can't stand to see some shitty end of the year list for "the best of 2016" on music paper/radio and all that, so all the music lovers on Live4ever Forum, let's make ours with quality. It's about albums released this year.
Here's mine:
1. Prospect Of Skelmersdale - The Magnetic North 2. Atomic - Mogwai 3. Blackstar - David Bowie 4. Minor Victories - Minor Victories 5. Painting of A Panic Attack 6. Distance Inbetween - The Coral 7. Everything At Once - Travis

I'll add more later on in time.

My friends at work and I were all recently discussing this and trading our lists. Here is mine. I think it's safe to drop it now. I don't expect anymore big releases for 2016. It was an ok year for music. 2017 seems like it could be a monster year with upcoming releases by Arcade Fire, The National, Noel and Liam Gallagher, LCD Soundsystem, The xx, Temples, Fleet Foxes, Gorillaz, Grandaddy, etc. My favorite albums of 2016Blackstar by David Bowie A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead Is The Is Are by DIIV We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service by A Tribe Called Quest Ruminations by Conor Oberst 22, A Million by Bon Iver A Light Upon The Lake by Whitney Down In Heaven by Twin Peaks Scmilco by Wilco My favorite songs of 2016Lazarus - David Bowie Healthy Moon - DIIV Burn The Witch - Radiohead Real Love Baby - Father John Misty Peace Trail - Neil Young The Space Program - A Tribe Called Quest Waves - Kanye West Residual Tingles - The Gaslamp Killer Planet Sizes - Steve Mason The Wheel - PJ Harvey Tachycardia - Conor Oberst Present Tense - Radiohead Hollow Home - Woods Gardenia - Iggy Pop Certainty - Temples Cry All Day - Wilco 8 Circle - Bon Iver Easier Said - Sunflower Bean No Woman - Whitney Cold Little Heart - Michael Kiwanuka I Wish I Was Sober - Frightened Rabbit (thank you mimmihopps) Human Performance - Praquet Courts Way We Won't - Grandaddy The Introduction - J Dilla Me and Your Mama - Childish Gambino Daydreaming - Radiohead Biggest Discoveries- Sunflower Bean - Whitney - Childish Gambino (Who knew Lando Calrissian had a rap career? ) Biggest Disappointments- All For One by The Stone Roses. What the fuck were they thinking? Thank God the follow up song was very very good! I'm lukewarm for future material. - M83. Sure the album isn't bad bad but it isn't anything great either. Very middle of the road and it does have the worst album cover in the history of music. Final Thoughts....My album of the year is "A Moon Shaped Pool". Call it a homer pick by me who is a massive Radiohead fan on par with my Oasis love but it was a spectacular release for a band going strong since 1993. Radiohead feels more alive and organic than ever before. This is probably the best production work Nigel Godrich has ever done in his career. Everything lands perfectly in each song. I don't normally list multiple songs by artists in my favorite songs lists but I felt this year Radiohead earned it. Burn The Witch, Daydreaming and Present Tense are all so different but all so touching in their own way. I consider this album to hang firmly along side Kid A, Ok Computer, The Bends and In Rainbows. This is Radiohead at their most vulnerable.

Blackstar all the way, for me. Blackstar, Lazarus, Girl Loves Me and Dollar Days are top tracks. Best Bowie's album since the 70's.
Radiohead have released their best album since Amnesiac. It's not on par with The Bends / OK Computer / Kid A / Amnesiac, but it's a good album in its own way. Great production by Godrich.
I've quite liked Travis last effort. Very good, imo.
I'm going to listen to Bon Iver album (seeing the praise it gets), never heard anything by him.

I recommend listening to Bon Iver in chronological order - this album is like his Kid A; it's important to understand its context in his career to understand it completely. All three of his albums are brilliant anyway

Michael Kiwanuka - Love & Hate I've given that Magnetic North album quite a few chances, but it still sounds utterly wishy-washy to me. Oh well, horses for courses an' all that. I'm taken with its rustic and meditative feel, and its wonderfully textured sounds. I like albums that provide a sense of place and surroundings, and I find this one very evocative. It's fairly uplifting too which makes a nice change. Like a walk in the country, a breath of fresh air for me!

The Escapist, have you heard Erland and The Carnival? Erland Cooper and Simon Tong (The Magnetic North) their main band. I stil really love their self titled debut album from 2010. If The Magnetic North sounds "utterly wishy-washy", Erland and The Carnival might give you a different impression. and matt, I'll check Hannah Peel's new album out for sure. Love her voice and she's very talented. I still need to check Bon Ivor's new album too.

It has been a pretty decent year for music, this one. At least by 2010s standards, anyway.

I think The Life of Pablo could have been right up there, if only the production and tracklisting were more focused. Something like this would have been a highlight (heh) of the year for me:
ACT ONE 1. Ultralight Beam 2. Father Stretch My Hands 3. Famous 4. Feedback 5. Waves 6. I Love Kanye
INTERLUDE 7. No More Parties in LA
ACT TWO 8. Fuck My Life 9. Real Friends 10. Wolves 11. Frank's Track 12. Fade 13. Saint Pablo
Where Act One is the exuberant, opulent side of Kanye's life (the model on the cover), No More Parties... is the turning point, and Act Two is the guilt and insecurity he feels about it all (the happy, humble wedding on the cover). This would have made the whole "WHICH ONE / WHICH ONE / WHICH ONE" concept a lot more impressive.

Well, here's how I've squared it - one personal favourite track off each of this year's best releases for me.
David Bowie - Lazarus (Jan) Iggy Pop - Gardenia (Mar) Travis - What Will Come (Apr) Richard Ashcroft - Out of My Body (May) Radiohead - Burn the Witch (May) Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Getaway (Jun) Tribe Called Quest - The Space Program (Nov) Neil Young - Peace Trail (Dec) John K Samson - Requests (Dec)
Also wanted to include a song off the new Pixies album. I heard it, enjoyed it, but can't remember what track. I'll have to listen to it again closely.
