So, I was on a Beatles forum this afternoon and found some poll that was called "classic against classic". The game was actually to take a Beatles classic and to compare it with an other band classic. One of the most popular poll was that one. Obviously, Eleanor Rigby won this but not by an outstanding margin. So I thought why not try it on this forum ?

I don't know. I wouldn't have thought to link both together if I haven't seen that poll. They're obviously different songs, two different bands, with a different songwriter, etc. However, I think two tracks can be compared in quality, no matter if they're really different (as long as it's not too out of place) or not. The comparisons always bring some interesting debates on the different qualities of the songs, their flaws, the quality of the songwriting, the emotions they give, etc. Not every track aims for the same goal, but it's interesting to see opinions about which one is closer to reach it.

Both are pop masterpieces. It's a very hard one to pick, but I'd go with Eleanor Rigby. It still amazes how amazing it can be with only 2 chords: Em and C.
Brilliant lyrics by mister McCartney, brilliant melody, George Martin being on his A-game, aswell. It's maybe his finest achievement on a Beatles song, along In My Life and I'm The Walrus. It might be my favourite Macca tune, ever. One of the best pop tunes ever written.
