Obvious question it seems at first. However people always have different points of views on what's a great, a decent or a bad melody. So what makes, for you, a melody "great" ? Is it when it's instantly recognizable ? When you can't get it off your head ? When it transfers very strong feelings ?
Let's debate.

Is this not kind of like asking what is "art"?
It's so subjective and personal to each person. I'm not sure I could give you a very good answer.
I tend to prefer songs that are rather direct. Often simple in nature. Easy to sing along as well.
So Oasis or early Beatles is perfect for me.

Sound familiar - humans enjoys certain cadences with familiar notes/progressions ( G C D ) , key structures, and rhythms Dynamic - wide range of notes(not necessarily quantity)/octaves from phrases or musical transitions (aka DLBIA verse to chorus jump) Simple is better - less is definitely more if you are trying to get people to hum it

What makes a melody great is: when you can drink a whole bottle of tequila and can still walk.....wait, that's not what I meant.
Thanks.

Flow. Great artist write songs that flows so naturraly that you don't even notice. You can write few seconds of good melody(listen BDI) but to have full experience you need to have good part after good part, good little melody after good mellody and most importantly, connected well. I always give this song as an example It starts so good, sounds like Lennon but then he just can't connected parts so well and song and mellody lose all qualities. But that is why Lennon is Lennon and Sergio is Sergio. So what makes a melody and songs great ? Well, great songwriter

- Catchiness, something that sticks in your head and makes you able to sing along. - When it makes you feel a certain way.
Or just simply liking it, because in the end, it's all subjective anyway.

when you think of it, some of the best songs are only 3-4 chords. and the melodies are so simple. i hear these songs all the time and say to myself 'why can't i write a song like that?' ... it's frustrating

I think the best melodies are the ones that you learn the first time you listen to the song.
Don't Look Back In Anger, There She Goes and Here Comes The Sun are all songs that were stuck in my head from the moment I first heard them.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I still don't know the melody of most Beady Eye songs.

Melodies are like pornography: I know it when I see it.
And LAG's involvement with Oasis, in this case, is not that.

Sometimes you listen to a song and you forget how it goes after 10 minutes When the song gets immediately stuck in your head that's a great melody

I am completely convinced that The Bee Gees are the kings of melody. Their songwriting abilities have really astounded me at every point of their career. Well, maybe not Life In A Tin Can, that was pretty atrocious aside from two songs.
They knew how to write hooks. They wrote so...so many of them. Even their final album, still coming up with fresh ideas. Hell, Robin's posthumous solo album is full of new hooks!
