clyp.it/g1fu0codI tried to do an a capella take of one of my songs (a short bit), I feel like I sound like a guy trying to imitate Liam but it's not on purpose But maybe that's just my imagination.

Some news: - I found band members on internet in Lyon. - Problem: I was not accepted in Lyon unversity. - I shared my demos on other places and I'm always pleasantly surprised most consider "As She Goes" as one of my strongest songs since I only spent 10 minutes writing it. The Crimson Rambler mystoryisgory I think it was both your favourite aswell

The Crimson Rambler mystoryisgory I think it was both your favourite aswell Correct! That was by far my favourite of the bunch. Amongst other things it was the track that suited your voice by far the best. It felt very natural and in your wheelhouse. It was kinda Velvet Underground-esque (a band which has aged very well in my opinion) and reminded me of Mucky Fingers (which is very much a compliment by the way as I'm a fan of the song). Noel has said on a few occasions now that most of his best songs are written very quickly and I've read many a quote from a songwriter claiming to write a song in 10 minutes. Sometimes you need an outside perspective to help make sense of your work and if you're getting consensus from multiple sources it's probably true! If I were you I'd make a considered effort to write more material in this style and see what feedback you get. Don't get bogged down in what you've written already. You should be trying to make everything you've written already irrelevant. As I've said to you previously get a DAW - even if it's Audacity (which is free btw). It should be high priority. A decent microphone would certainly be a big help too.

Both will make your recordings sound that much better, and we all know how much harder good songs hit when they're better produced.
Also, never be afraid to try new ideas: drum loops, reverb, effects, samples, and other production tricks can add a lot to your songs and make them better.

Thanks The Crimson Rambler and mystoryisgory for your comments. I'll be honest I feel a bit ridiculous to have shared so badly recorded demos. I hope I can get to the studio and record proper full band demos. Then I'll try to send it to college radios and pubs, I think.

I hope I can get to the studio and record proper full band demos. Then I'll try to send it to college radios and pubs, I think. No problem. There's nothing wrong with poorly recorded demos. They're demos. They're only as important as you want them to be. I've mentioned this before but for the life of me I have no idea why in 2020 you'd want to pay someone to use a studio to record demos. Why would you do that instead of doing it on your own? You'll be under unnecessarily strict time and financial pressure. And what if you don't like the results? It'll be demoralising. Get a few cheap microphones a DAW (like everyone else does) and do it yourself. You can experiment, do alternative takes, rerecord things as much as you'd like and you'll learn so, so much. You'll be a better musician for it, you might start thinking about writing differently... It's a no-brainer it really is. In terms of promotion I don't know what's the best way to approach it (I presume playing live as often as possible and having a decent online presence) however the college radio/pub idea doesn't sound the best to me. Maybe you know more than me. Personally I think your priority should be: 1) writing as many songs as possible 2) find like minded people to play with 3) play live as much as possible 4) self record demos (preferably of new material) with a DAW 5) set up a strong online presence.

Would like to echo this about studios and online promotion. Technology has got good enough that you can create a full studio production in your bedroom with affordable equipment and software. Musicians put out albums that are entirely created using GarageBand all the time, and you wouldn't even know they weren't recorded in a studio unless someone told you. These days lo-fi music isn't a result of lack of access to good equipment, it's a deliberate creative choice.
And unfortunately the college radio scene just isn't what it used to be. Getting popular thru college radio and pubs is how bands got popular 20-30 years ago but now your best bet is to build clout using the internet. You can reach a much wider audience that might otherwise be separated geographically. And you more easily reach a specific audience without having to blend into a scene and compromise your sound. Don't be afraid to use the internet to your advantage.

Thanks guys for your posts ! I mentioned studio cos' I don't know much about self recording but I'm gonna try to look more into it. As of finding same minded musicians, I'm finally not moving to Lyon but to Nice. Nice isn't really a city full of rock bars/venues (to a much lesser extent than Lyon anyway). It isn't really a rock'n'roll or even just musical city tbh.
As for promotion, I'll think more about it when I'll have proper demos. Maybe some nice videos would be a bonus ? I don't really know tbh.
See you guys !

A lot changed in more than a month. Finally, the university of Lyon accepted me at the end of august, while I wasn't believing about it anymore. So now, I'm Lyon and I've met 3 other musicians to form our band. We have been rehearsing a few times now (we have worked on "Be Alright", "Sail Around The World" and a cover of "Archie, Marry Me"). I'm very happy to have found bandmates and we share a lot influences, so it's very cool !

I finally bought proper material to record my stuff, so my bandmates and I are doing our parts separately, and then we're gonna mix it (first song we're doing at the moment is "Sail Around The Wolrd"). I also recorded an acoustic demo of a new track, "The Better Days". Here's the link https%3A//soundcloud.com/supernova26-211062806/the-better-days-demoWorld71R mimmihopps keke igotflairEDIT: Tagging a few people who might be interested to see that I finally have the good stuff to record demos with a decent quality

Gonna listen to these, lubeck. "Molly's House" has some nostalgic atmosphere, a Summer day in sunset which I like.

Tagging only The Crimson Rambler and keke , but I'd be happy with anyone's feedback As I'm sure you'll remember, as I've said a number of times, this my favourite song of yours so I'm really pleased that you've returned to it and given it some more of your time. For me this is an invaluable lesson in what you got right in your first demo and where the song can go in the future. To summarise I think in this new recording you've given a somewhat more subdued take on the song but I personally think the energy of the original without doubt part of what made it so great. That said experienting is hugely important and it's great to hear you trying out new things. Structurally I still think something might be missing from the song but what that is I'm not entirely sure. Maybe it's an obvious chorus? Perhaps you could trying turning the piano melody into one?

Tagging only The Crimson Rambler and keke , but I'd be happy with anyone's feedback well actually i like that the sound quality is so good compared to the old versions, wasn't big fan of this song (no offence ). still it would be great if you re-record with all old ones with improving ways like this with as many group members as possible, anyway. better mix than acoustic/electric version cause i got feeling only acoustic version got much more energy, this was bit lesser energic maybe but more mature sound maybe because of piano.
im not quite sure about what missing if there is something missing, im not that kind of pro, but could be add piano part intro and outro, as a change which will make the more mature sound I'm talking about more understandable

The Crimson Rambler keke Thanks for the honest feedbacks . It's interesting that you also both had different opinions on the tune, cos' I noticed it's the case also for other people with who I shared the tune in the past. Some people say it's my tune with the best potential and others say it's just ok. Crimson, I think you get it right about the missing link in the song. It does lack a chorus. That's why, before eventually finding one, I tried a sudden change of mood towards the end of the demo, to get some change into the demo. This song is still intended to be a "band" song, but as we all live in different parts of the country at the moment, it's hard to get things done rather quick. So I'm trying out new things, and opening myself to other ideas, just waiting for september to get back to the rehearsal room

I think if you ever find that chorus everything will slot into place quite easily after. The more options you create for the song the better it'll no doubt be. What are the chords by the way? Verse: C/F/G/F Refrain: Am/C/G?/? Middle 8: Em/Am/F/G/C/Em/Am/?
