My god that's bad.
The amount of cringe in that clip is unreal.

Wow. That was shit. I loved SOI. All hope for a worthy follow up completely shot out the window.

That clip sounds like shit. I'll wait for the full song but the clip certainly isn't very promising.
Hopefully the first real single, which is out next week, will be better.

And this isn't even the new single. Just an album teaser.

Yeah, I was wrong. It's not too bad. It doesn't blow me away but it sounds interesting.

Fair fucks, it's not the Kasabian/Catfish nightmare I was expecting. Rocks out more than those two pussy wimp bands anyhow, and it's good to hear The Edge and Adam Clayton prominent in a rocking tune once more. Far better than The Miracle and Get On Your Boots (though that's not difficult).
I don't expect an experimental album as much as I'd like to so here's hoping it has a heavier feel to it rather than an uber-polished piece of work.

Be prepared for the "You're The Best Thing" single disappointment next week! I thought the version we've heard already was quite catchy though. Hopefully it's not produced to within an inch of its life!
The drum part during the verse of The Blackout is great I have to say.

Very radio friendly, it has some cool stuff going on but I get that modernized radio pop vibe from it, particularly in the chorus.

it's ok. i guess i have to just let it go and stop holding U2 to the high standards i once did, they're just not that band any more.

Feel like I thought it was much better than it actually is when I heard it. Mainly because the clip they posted scared the shit out of me so much that this was a welcomes relief.
Thankfully, within the context of the song, the chorus doesn't too much like a desperate cry for relevancy.
I think the most interesting portions of the song are the verses. Really nice bass patterns. The least interesting parts are the choruses. Catchy, but just ok.

24 hours after hearing it, and it's still a decent tune. I agree with you all that it's nothing spectacular, and the chorus is just so bleeding obvious and cliched that it stops it from being great. It's a wonder how U2 haven't yet realised that their creative purple patch in the 90s didn't rely on lung bursting choruses - look at The Fly, in my opinion one of the greatest lead singles ever, yet it doesn't have a sing a long chorus to it. Someone should tell Bono that less is more, and the more restraint he shows results in better songs for U2, aside from the 80s work when he still had the vocal power, and in fairness, some of the hits on All That You Can't Leave Behind justify it.
But I really really like those verses, especially those bluesy little guitar fills from The Edge in the verses. It's nice to hear something prominent and interesting from him again - he's been on autopilot as much as Bono's vocals and melody have these last few albums. The bassline is really groovy too, so some great work from Adam, who in fairness, is probably the U2 member whose been most on the ball musically (his basslines in No Line were probably the best thing on it). Musically and structurally, there's more thought to it than the previous piss poor rock lead singles (seriously, how the fuck did they think The Miracle is album worthy, let alone release worthy??)
I wonder if this is the Jacknife Lee influence coming through - he was a shot in the arm for REM's last couple of albums. Not great by any stretch, but very decent and solid albums I thought. Realistically that's what U2 should be looking at if they aren't going to team up with Eno/Lanois ever again (I wonder if that partnership will ever get back together).
That said, the proper lead single - The Best Thing - is beyond redemption. I don't care if the sound has been beefed up, the vocal melody is so generic.

Heard it on my drive into work this morning... generic pop rock tune. Nothing terrible, nothing spectacular. It'll do I suppose.

i have learned that when you have to explain and/or justify why a song is good, it really isn't.
