But I got to let you know....That the world's not set in stone....
Now we have come to BDI's sophomore album, when Liam, Andy, and Gem tried to do what their former band could not: change their sound! Whether they achieved that goal is debatable, but they did deliver a decent album in the process. But could it have been better? I sure as hell think so!
Here's what my tracklist would look like:
Flick of the Finger Soul Love Second Bite of the Apple Soon Come Tomorrow Back After the Break Girls in Uniform Don't Brother Me The World's Not Set in Stone Ballroom Figured Off at the Next Exit Start Anew
The three rockers (Face the Crowd, Iz Rite, I'm Just Saying) are discarded for 1. being at odds with the band's reinvention and 2. being shit songs. Shine a Light is also knocked off because it's a boring, half-written acoustic shuffle that always sends me scrambling for the "skip" button. In their places, we take four ace songs from the deluxe edition that should have never been consigned to such a terrible fate. Back After the Break and Girls in Uniform are rescued from obscurity for fitting in better with the "chill" vibes of the era rather than the three aforementioned DGSS outtakes. The World's Not Set in Stone is promoted for having one of the best choruses in BDI's discography and picks up the momentum of the album better than Shine a Shite. Off at the Next Exit is also dragged up from the deluxe edition and serves as a great penultimate track. Andy is short one song, but deservedly so: his contributions to BE were undoubtedly the weakest and most backward. Some of you might balk at my exclusion of Evil Eye but if any BDI song can be called overrated, it's this one.
And with these improvements, we finally have an album that sits nicely as the best thing BDI ever did! (I'm one of those weird fuckers who prefers DGSS to BE)
P.S. I dare someone to vote for the backward atrocity that is Dreaming of Some Space. The most egregious thing ever written by anyone. Unfortunately BDI couldn't make something as charming as Don't Stop.

I guess I'm one of the few people on here who actually like Shine a Light Out: Face the Crowd (uninspired rocker), Iz Rite (dull as fuck), Don't Brother Me (I like the psychedelic coda but as a tune is quite appalling) and Ballroom Figured (I never got the love for this to be honest, and I don't like Liam's vocal performance here). In: Back After the Break, Girls in Uniform, Evil Eye and White Smoke. Tracklist:Flick of the Finger Soul Love I'm Just Saying Girls in Uniform Second Bite of the Apple Evil Eye Shine a Light White Smoke Soon Come Tomorrow Back After the Break Start Anew

Unfortunately BDI couldn't make something as charming as Don't Stop. Fucking love that song, one of my favourites BDI ever did, not even joking (I get it's just a random bit of Start Anew reversed and modified and how it probably sounds shit and that if I'd heard that song first at a later time, I probably would've hated it, but I dunno, it clicked at the time and for some reason it has personal meaning to me)

I don't want to live in a world where Soul Love get more votes than Flick Of The Finger I do. Flick is at best a tease of a song. It's like watching a trailer for a film that never got released for full viewing.

I notice very little love for Girls in Uniform.
It might not be Liam's best vocal performance, but I really like it. It certainly deserved a place on the album... and the outro is brilliant!

Didn't realise that The World's Not Set in Stone wasn't a fan favorite. If any song could put to rest those criticisms that Liam can't write a chorus, it's this one!

I agree with you in that in "The World's Not Set in Stone" we see Liam pen a passable chorus; however, for me, something about the song does not sit right with me. My initial thought is that, instead of focusing on dynamics, perhaps the recording itself presents the song in bland, sonically flat fashion.

I thought about putting Soul Love at track three with SBOTA at track two, to carry the energy of FOTF, but it just didn't seem right.
Nevertheless, this is an album that had a lot of potential, but unfortunately, they relegated a lot of it to the bonus tracks and some poorly executed singles.

Poll locked. Thanks to all who voted! So the L4E BE would have included these tunes: Flick of the Finger Soul Love Second Bite of the Apple Soon Come Tomorrow Iz Rite I'm Just Saying Shine a Light Start Anew Back After the Break Off at the Next Exit Evil Eye Not really what I envisioned...but that's alright. Don't ask me how Shine a Light got more votes than SBOTA. C U in CY soon!
