Not sure how many folk are aware of this band (I know mimmihopps loves them) but they are a truly great band featuring Orkney songwriter Erland Cooper, singer from Yorkshire Hannah Peel and Simon Tong (formerly of The Verve and The Good, The Bad & The Queen). Their second album Skelmersdale is out soon and is the follow up to their debut Orkney: Symphony of the Magnetic North. If you are a fan of Sigur Ros post-rock or shoegazing they are well worth a look at ( Lennon2217, The Escapist ??). A bit lighter so maybe best to say folkish post rock/shoegazing but they take all the best elements of these genres, such as the influence of places and the landscape to carve out something quite unique. Really great interview here in The Quietus. thequietus.com/articles/19816-the-magnetic-north-interview-skelmersdale

I don't listen to them as much as I did in the past but they're an incredible band.

Talented Erland Cooper, beautiful voice of Hannah Peel and the wisedom of Simon Tong make something truly brilliant. I don't think there's many simliar bands like them. They're very unique and very original. I really loved their first album and looking forward to the second album which is out this Friday. Their record company "Full Time Hobby" isn't huge, but they do have talented bands/singers just like Fat Cat Records. Check their webstie out if you're interested. www.fulltimehobby.co.uk/home/I've seen Samantha Crain and The John Steel Singers together with Erland and The Carnival 2 years ago and Hooded Fang and The Leisure Society at London Calling some years ago.

I loved their first album, but I'm loving this new album more. What a brilliant pieces of art. Definitely one of the best albums I ever had. I've not listened to anything since - one of those rare albums that hits you on first listen, yet your keep discovering more bits and pieces with every other listen. It's a perfect album, and more expansive and layered than the first album.

Their first album "Symphony..." was more darker than this one, yet both albums are very high qualified. I remember you said "Valtari" by Sigur Ros makes you feel like you're on top of the mountain and I would say this album makes you feel like you're in a forest. Bands like The Magnetic North and The Twilight Sad realise me how great to being a music lover.

The album is a lot more optimistic with a variety of woodwind instruments (conjuring up 1970s soundtracks I read). And yes I agree, the mood of the first album is dark as it is dictated by the sad story of Betty Corrigall. She was a local women who committed suicide in the late 1770s after her partner who got her pregnant left her to go to sea and because of the religious attitudes at the time she was castigated from the community. Because that drove her to despair to the point of suicide, she was also refused a proper burial as she was deemed a sinner because of it. Her body was buried in the wilderness on the island of Hoy, in the middle of nowhere and her body was excavated after peat cutters discovered it in the 1970s so they gave her a full burial service where she was found so she could rest in peace. I'm not religious but it's nice there was a sense of closure to it, and it's now a tourist attraction which seems to attract much intrigue amongst visitors here in the summer. I can say personally it is a bleak but intriguing place seeping with melancholy, and her white headstone stands out amongst the windswept rolling landscape. It's all very symbolic, and it really does symbolise loneliness and compounds the sadness of it all. It is very inspiring though as a result and it conjures up many feelings, you can even tell that by looking at photos of the place. They say pictures can tell a thousand stories, well I think they can sing a thousand songs too. It's easy to see why it inspired great music though - it's amazing how the environment and landscapes around you and can inspire people and dictate their art, and shows music doesn't just have to be about the inner emotions of the person writing the song. If more songwriters were perceptive of the world around them and how it could inspire them, then maybe there'd be even more great music around.

He's incredibly underrated is Simon Tong. He's worked on some great albums, but this latest Magnetic North project is his own personal crowning glory.
