I think i've finally figured out why Noel's mic stand was changed in the DBTT tour.
He used to use a 2-part stand leaving a big distance from the stand and his guitar (which I personally prefer singing into) but it was changed to a straight mic-stand like Liams.
I've started having singing lessons recently and was told about mic stands and placement etc. that it is better to have the mic so you're ever so slightly leaning down on it with it facing up at you. This then relaxes the muscles in the chest, shoulders and neck, let alone the vocal chords.
I was also taught that when singing in falsetto that you're supposed to drop your chin and look down ever so slightly for these same reasons.
The levels on that video aren't great to actually here the singing but the technique is all there. (pretty much do the total opposite of what Liam does when he sings).

Do you have a teacher? Maybe you can let her/him hear Liams voice, he/she is probably able to say whats wrong with his voice (if it's because of his mic stand, his smoking, or both...I'm quite curious to know the exact reason - like most of us)

Didn't Noel make all these mistakes though? It seems like Liam just doesnt make an attempt to really improve himself.

The only difference between Liam and Noel is the stand of their mics.
However, if you take a look at the SotSoG tour, Liam didn't sing for 2 years (since the Be Here Now tour), and his voice was absolutely dreadful. So I'm doubting it has anything to do with the stand of his mic. How can your voice be damaged from your mic stand, in a period when you never sing? However Liams voice can't sound so shot just from aging, can it?

plus, liam doesn't wear in-ear pieces, which would: a) block the sound from the stage b) allow him to hear every instrument clearly c) make him not yell (off key) and do his "kermit voice."

1. Liam did a lot more singing than Noel did in the early days 2. Noel has done some considerable work on his voice 3. Again, Liam shouts and his stance (being under the mic) really fucks your voice up. The only difference between Liam and Noel is the stand of their mics. However, if you take a look at the SotSoG tour, Liam didn't sing for 2 years (since the Be Here Now tour), and his voice was absolutely dreadful. However Liams voice can't sound so shot just from aging, can it? In answer to your question, think about it. 1997, The Be Here Now Tour, the single period in which Liam was on more drugs, booze and cigarettes than he ever will be in his life. This carried on in 1998 and the beginning of 1999.. The band decided to stop the drugs and booze while recording SOTSOG. 2 years of non-stop, fags, drugs and booze are gonna seriously mess your voice up.

Then why does his voice still get more terrible with every single year? If you compare the HC tour with the DBTT tour, there's a huge difference. And again, Liam didn't sing for roughly 3 years (2002-2005), so his stance didn't afflict any damage during that period. I think liam's just got a weak voice that got worse with age. But to go back on-topic: Maybe you can ask your singing teacher, (s)he will probably know more about this.

I think I've said it before, but it looks like Noel's trying to be the anti-Liam with his new mic stand.

His voice sounds the way he does because he shouts. He never learned how to sing loudly and properly. You'll notice he can do an acoustic version of Songbird or Wonderwall for the radio (as he did 2 years ago for Radio Aid or whatever it was called) and sound like a 22 year old kid in 1995 again. Its all down to the fact that for the live shows, he feels the need to project more. Unfortunately, he never learned how to do that without losing his voice in the process. Operatic singers can project about 5 times louder barely moving their bodies or using their throat and its because they learned how to sing properly. If Liam can learn how to project without shouting he'll be fine. Keep in mind, by the time we hear them on tour, they've already gone through about 2 months of rehearsals every day.

He doesn't even need to project, that's something that Noel learnt... at the Maine Road gig if you listen to Don't Look Back In Anger he's trying to sing to the people at the back of the stadium but these days he's not straining.. Liam needs to let the mic do the work.

If you watch LDSMD, he has ear pieces in all the time! There's the famous scene where he's rubbing KY jelly in his ears so they won't get sore from the earphones. I don't think we can let him off by using that as an excuse. "The things I have to do, eh? KY jelly in me fuckin' ears!"

Why don't they turn up the volume for him? If thats the problem. I think Liam used to sing in falsetto what was great in the early days. But his voice these days can't hit high notes, so he couldn't sing songs in a higher pitch he used to. Some pieces of the Within You Without You cover this year are great, it's sounds like Liam 10 years ago coz he sings high notes.
