Have you ever bought an album (or single) solely based on the cover or album title?
Have you ever bought an album solely based on its recommendation by one Mr. N. Gallagher?
Finally, have you ever bought an album without hearing a single second of it and loved it? Regretted it?
In these days of people not buying much music anymore, at least physically, I think these experiences must be pretty common. Share yours!

Does downloading based on a cover count? If so, yes. Without the exchange of money, there's no risk and my expectation is lower. I got an album called Roughneck Reality by Jamal-Ski. The album is some kind of early 90s dancehall and the cover is hilarious. I don't like it, but I keep it in iTunes to see it when I scroll through.
Noel's recommendations have led me astray as a solo artist but in the oasis days I'd buy anything he said he liked and was usually pleased. The exception being the Hellacopters. Terrible band. I got into the Soundtrack of Our Lives because of him and love that band.
I bought Travis' 12 Memories based on what I knew of the band. It is the least accessible of their stuff and I played a bit of each track and put it away thinking it was bad. I picked it up months later and tried again. Now, it is the only Travis album I listen to and one of my favorites. Weird but true.

I bought several vinyl LPs at second hand stores for 50 cents per record.
- a record by the Farm. I liked the cover but I've never listend to it. Spartacus! (any good?) - a James record ( I've never got into them and never played it) - Especially For You by the Smithereens... So I bought it.
- a remix EP with obscure mixes of Happy Mondays songs. It only had handwritten labels. I thought it was rare. I'll have to listen to it now.

1. No 2. Yes; Waiting for the Sun by The Doors (indirect recommendation since WFTR borrowed from "Five to One", the album closer) 3. Yes; Chasing Yesterday, Pop (minus bits of "Discotheque"), Sonic Highways, WFTS, Pinkerton. The first two were wonderful purchases. The third wasn't bad, but I never really got into the last two.

I still collect CDs. I got into it in the beginning of the noughties when that format was going strong. For the past three years I've been buying my records mainly used or from warehouse clearances. There's not a point in buying new albums when I've gotten stuff like Alex Turner's Submarine EP for 0,5€ used. I still do preorder some albums from time to time if I want them real quick. 1) I bought an album that I thought was female-sung pop but it turned out to be a debut from a heavy metal band... Such a misleading cover. And they weren't even remotely interesting musically (and just horrible when it came to lyrics). 2) I bought the Bee Gees 1st by the Oasis' guys recommendation and its outrageous cover. The early Bee Gees is an absolute joy to listen to. Gallaghers have gotten me into The La's, The Smiths and The Stone Roses (-> Ian Brown -> UNKLE -> DJ Shadow), too. It feels like a neverending adventure to find new great bands from the UK guitarpop scene as every band leads to another. 3) I have bought albums without hearing a single second of its contains but usually they haven't really impressed me. I have bought them just by the cover, the year it was released, if the artist's name is familiar or if it has seemed like a good bargain. Pet Sounds was alright, Beck's Morning Phase pretty good, Roxy Music's four album set didn't do anything to me, Paul McCartney's Kisses from the Bottom is nice to have on sunday mornings, Rickard Jarveling's Two times five lullaby is a melancholy gem. And of course I have collected full discographies of bands that I like just based on hearing one great album or a song by them but that doesn't really count, does it?
