Watching Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory's derby game replay and saw a goal but the ref disallowed it. Do the football leagues need to use video technology to do what the refs cannot these days? By the way a ball crossing the line is a goal (not a Victory fan, just know that was)

On seeing the thread title (out of context, on my mobile) I must admit I briefly thought you meant "is it needed in general?" If not, I guess these BBC engineers were wasting their time in the late 50s.

Will we ever need anything better than say 8K resolution? It's not as if the size of people's rooms are expanding so surely there is a limit to the size of TV & resolution!

Will we ever need anything better than say 8K resolution? It's not as if the size of people's rooms are expanding so surely there is a limit to the size of TV & resolution! Yes, good point. I read an article published by BBC R&D recently which suggests that there is a perceptible increase in picture quality going from 1080p to 4K, but only on very large screens. Which makes sense. After all, your local cinema usually projects at 4k. On typically-sized domestic TV screens, at normal viewing distances (and with viewers of average visual acuity) the increase in resolution over HD is not so noticeable as the change to a wider colour gamut, higher frame rate, and high dynamic range (both features of the new ultra HD formats). As stated in the podcast linked below it's not so much about the number of pixels, but the quality of them. HDR and wider colour gamuts could also be applied to normal HD. tinyurl.com/hq8pnku Another issue is the amount of lossy compression that has to be applied to the video signal in order for it to be broadcast or distributed over the net. Digital standard definition would look far better uncompressed, but that needs a high bit-rate of around 270 Megabits per second. It can be handled in a studio but not for broadcast. Uncompressed HD is around 1.2GB per sec... that said, the codecs are getting more efficient over time.

Report on a Charlatans gig shot in 8K, with 22.2 channel sound. This was an experiment by the BBC, in collaboration with the Japanese broadcaster NHK.

Goal Line Technology? Fine.
Anything additional/further would slowly ruin the sport.

Goal Line Technology? Fine. Anything additional/further would slowly ruin the sport. I agree, with one possible exception. If they can come up with technology that can tell you if someone was offside and it tell you within a couple of seconds then i could see this being beneficial.

^ a good pair of glasses is the only technology needed to get that one right.

Here's the Finkler disallowed goal last night (again, it was a goal):
The ref must have been hired by Citeh.

I don't know though - even with goal line technology - I think the controversy adds to it all. I'm not adverse to everything being done at the discretion of the officials.
Think about what gets talked about the most down the pub after the match? That tackle that was a clear red but wasn't given, the dive in the box that conned the ref, etc.
It's all part of the game, and makes things even more exciting. Again, a pure and perfect game would be dull as fuck.

It shouldn't all be "part of the game". Sure, things combine and they might affect each others in some ways, but they aren't parts of a whole. Things can be just what they are.

There are enough subjective parts of the game for there not to be a need for the officials to be getting the objective parts wrong, just to give people something to talk about.

Football is backward and as FIFA has shown has been run by backward people for a long time who's only aim is to maintain the status quo. If it could be done in the right way I'm all for it.
