When recommending a band to your friend, how do you suggest that they start?
Well, I'll say that I got into Oasis through WTSMG, of course. Which is considered by many to be their best album, and certainly their most accessible. But would you recommend Stop the Clocks or Time Flies to a new fan? Or maybe even BHN? What is the best way to indoctrinate someone into the die-hard fanbase of a band?

A playlist made by an informed fan is usually the way to go. We should have a thread where you can post a band you want to get into, and get a playlist by a fan in return.

one band i got into i have noel gallagher to thank
i bought a copy of mojo in 2005 because it had a massive article about the stone roses,,anyhoo another article was about shack and the picture for the article was pete doherty with a + then oasis and a = then shack
in the article noel wrote a piece banging on about this underated band from liverpool and how he released a new lp and best of on his sour mash label,,i had a voda phone contract at the time that came with a music library so i searched for shack and found zilch,,waterpistol and hms fable downloaded them to my phone and was blown away spent about the next month or so collecting all the albums and ive never looked back so cheers noel

The playlist I give to someone to discover Oasis (90's Oasis)
Supersonic Live Forever The Masterplan Some Might Say Rock'n'Roll Star Whatever Slide Away Half The World Away
Relatively shows the variety of the band in the 90's.

A friend of mine just suggested to me another great way to get into a band: start from their debut single and work your way toward their latest album. Pretend that you were one of the first to discover this band's brilliance. Listen to every song in the order it was released. Even better, wait a week or two between two releases to simulate the waiting time. This way, you can gain a clear insight into the band's development as musicians and songwriters, as well as context regarding how each new release was received by the public. In fact this might be the best way to experience any band.

It just happens how it happens, there is no right or best way.

I always wondered this, too.
For me - I do better with the most accessible album, and if I like it go from there.
What trips me up are bands that have TONS of albums like New Order and U2 (for example). Like what the hell do you do wit that!?

Listen to artist, did you liked it? Hear more stuff of that artist. Rinse and repeat. Might encounter some stuff you dont like, and that's alright. It would be borring if everyone liked the same song for the same reasons.

P.S. actually the best way to get into New Order is through their compilation Substance 1987. Probably the greatest thing they ever did.

That's why I picked best aka favorite album, if someone asked me about a band, I'd send them that way, because it is as good a way to start as others. I personally like to find music best by pure chance. One song you hear on the radio, in a movie, whereever, and, ZOOM, you're hooked. I very much enjoy it when that happens.

when i first read the title of this thread, i thought it was literally asking the best way to get into a band, as in how to become an actual member of a band. lol

what happens when they don't have a greatest hits? 'best of' then? I meant that there was no compilation, they simply have there albums. Or worse what if they do have best of yet they only released one or two albums, like Jeff Buckley.

a bit off topic: on the subject of a greatest hits--- one of my pet peeves is when an artist or a band releases a greatest hits album, and leaves off a good tune or two to make room for a new song that is nothing but a gigantic turd.

There is the Phil Ochs option of naming your studio album greatest hits.

I usually end up getting into a band quite unintentionally through hearing a song or two that really catches me. For instance, recently Lennon2217 I think posted some new Iggy Pop tunes, Gardenia and another one. Just thought I'd give it a listen, didn't have anythign else on. I enjoyed it - terrific number with a fluid bass grumble and Iggy sounding rather like Bowie and some neat sparse guitar work. Now this is a new album that's coming out, so I'd go that route. It if were an older tune, my next move woudl be check out the greatest hits collections and find one that seems right. From there, if I still want more, I go for most accessible album then into other well received ones. Once I've got all the albums down, I go for the bsides. Which can be some work but its very rewarding when you find an artist that does bsides really well. The final step is live albums and then bootlegs. Then you are almost a grandmaster.
