The other day a friend of mine asked me why bassists were necessary to rock bands, considering that their contributions often take a backseat to the rest of the instrumentation (especially in Oasis! ). Of course, I was aghast at such a suggestion, because I could name many songs where bass was an integral part of the song. Then it occurred to me that, in the age of smartphones and lossy formats, some kids might not be able to hear the bass in its full glory. Unless they have Beats headphones. So what are some of your favourite basslines? Here are some of mine: The Beatles - Rain. Macca's playing adds so much texture to the song. Radiohead - The National Anthem. The repetitiveness of this one gives it a sinister feel, and is the only constant element of a song filed with chaos. Queen and David Bowie - Under Pressure. Can we just call this the most epic basslines in rock history? Ok, moving along.... Muse - Hysteria. Insanely complex and heavy, sounds more like a lead guitar part instead of a bassline. I wonder sometimes how the song would sound if the bassline was played on guitar, and the guitar part played on bass. Probably wouldn't sound nearly as special.

A great song with not one, but two great basslines(excuse the tacky music video), one of the best bass intros if you ask me, You hear the first bass, then the second one and the guitar a little bit afterwards.
Viniloversus - Directo al Grano
Arcade Fire - You Already Know
The Killers - Somebody Told Me
RHCP - Around The World(if only this record was properly mastered, it's a disgrace how flat and lifeless sounds)

For alternative music, nothing beats this....
But the bass was made for funk, like this piece of brilliance.

So many of Bruce Foxton's bass lines in the Jam songs stand out to me...can't imagine The Jam without him or Rick Buckler.

I love a good bassline. I recently got a new pair of headphones and they're better than anything I've ever had before, so I'm just discovering basslines on songs I might have not noticed before. All the Smiths songs have great basslines (not just Barbarism, which always gets mentioned).
Very underrated.

Barbarism should always be mentioned because the bassline from this song is just fantastic. Will I Wonder is one of The Smiths underrated songs, yet it's so beautiful and those rain drops! Also even if it's only intro - I Wanna Be Adored by the Roses.

The mother of leadbass:
New Order/Joy Division tunes are quite obvious because of the high bass tuning Peter Hook used to play, so it's always quite prominently featured in the mix. I also like the way Colin Greenwood does seemingly play random notes in Radiohead's Airbag until he really picks it off in the outro:
Not to forget 'The Ox':
Block Rockin' Beats, anyone?

So many of Bruce Foxton's bass lines in the Jam songs stand out to me...can't imagine The Jam without him or Rick Buckler. Agreed. Down in the Tube Station at Midnight is one of my favourites. The bass on that has a twitchy, nervous energy that brilliantly complements the tense atmosphere evoked by Weller's lyrics. The whole band's playing on that track is incredible.
