While listening to one (Mork with one of my top 10 last year), are one man bands still niche?

Someone should do this with Oasis songs.

Diving head first again into Einstürzende Neubauten's Halber Mensch album. I'm going to disagree again with Pitchfork, Ende Neu is the second best, this is Blixa at his vocal 1-2 punches though

This band released a rock cover of Justin Beiber's "Baby" today, and it's fantastic, ha.

While we're apart, me and my girlfriend (who is lurking here somewhere, presumably wearing a bucket hat to fit in) have been listening to an album together each night. I've shown her OK Computer and Funeral so far - the latter was enjoyed, the former was a little futuristic - and she's been getting me into The Kinks more properly. We started with Village Green, which was great, and then Something Else by The Kinks and Face to Face, both of which were good as well. Last night we listened to Pet Sounds, which was sweet and bright and melodic but not fully to my taste; I'd have liked more variety in there, even if only subtle.
Anyway, throughout the year, if we keep it up, I'll update with my list of the albums we've listened to, even if they're ones I already know, along with my unreliable first-impression ratings and favourite tracks:
- Album: The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks - Rating: A strong seven to a light eight, I enjoyed it and will go back to it for sure. - Highlights: The title track, Picture Book, Sitting by the Riverside, Animal Farm, Village Green.
- Album: Something Else by the Kinks by The Kinks - Rating: A decent to strong seven, a good record with top songs but less cohesion than Village Green. - Highlights: Waterloo Sunset, Afternoon Tea, Harry Rag, (Mr Pleasant).
- Album: OK Computer by Radiohead - Rating: A light to decent nine; a classic only let down by the awkward inclusion of "Electioneering". - Highlights: Airbag, Let Down, Karma Police, No Surprises, The Tourist.
- Album: Face to Face by The Kinks - Rating: A decent six; a good and enjoyable record with less knock-out punches than the other two. - Highlights: Sunny Afternoon, Rainy Day in June, (Dead End Street).
- Album: Funeral by Arcade Fire - Rating: A decent to strong eight; an indie watermark with bags of passionate emotion and unique arrangements. - Highlights: Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels), Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out), Neighbourhood #2 (Laika).
- Album: Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys - Rating: A light six; I see why it's beloved, but outside of a few highlights I don't feel pulled back on first listen. - Highlights: God Only Knows, Wouldn't it Be Nice, That's Not Me, Pet Sounds.
I also cheated on her and listened to a Stevie Wonder album on my own. That was bad of me, and doesn't count.

That in blue though, is almost ban worthy. Pet Sounds' melodies are heavenly, I still can't believe Brian Wilson wrote it all. Absolute genius album, from start to finish.
Which Stevie Wonder album did you listen to ?

Which Stevie Wonder album did you listen to ? I'm willing to bet Songs in the Key of Life. It was "Music of my Mind". I really liked it. Have gone back more than once, already. And it's entirely possible I'll love Pet Sounds one day. It didn't wow me on first listen but neither did Bob Dylan or Radiohead and now they're both in my top five favourite artists ever.

I recently got into Rilo Kiley. I knew their "hit" "Go Ahead" 20 years ago but never really dug into their catalog. But the first 4 records are quality. The last one is a bit too mainstream pop for me.
But the rest is some really good indie music, with that warm early 00s sound.

Every January I tend to go on a massive Neil Young binge. I’m a big fan and am especially fond of his work from 2000-2014. His 1969-79 work is always recognised, as it should be and his 90s work was a true comeback after an interesting and explorative (for hardcore fans only it seems) 80s period. But in the 2000s we see (at least I feel) his work climbed a step higher, melding the best of his folky and ragged rock stylings, with his tendency to explore interests and concepts successfully.
Anyways, preamble aside, my top NY songs post 2000
Distant camera Gateway of Love Going Home Bandit It’s a dream Living with war Angry world Walk like a giant All of those dreams My hometown (Springsteen cover)
The songs I’ve chosen are all from 2000 to 2014. The last ten years have been interesting but not as brilliant as this period IMO which I rate as my favourite NY era.

Imagine if The Smiths' self-titled debut album had had this tracklisting...
A1. Reel Around the Fountain A2. This Charming Man A3. Pretty Girls Make Graves A4. What Difference Does It Make? A5. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle B1. Still Ill B2. Hand in Glove B3. You've Got Everything Now B4. I Don't Owe You Anything B5. Suffer Little Children
I think that would've been killer-diller! About as good as that album could have been without re-recording it all a third time.
'Miserable Lie' could've been kept back for the 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' single, released three months later. That way they wouldn't have had to re-release 'Suffer Little Children' to fill the quota of two B-sides for every A-side. And it would've got the song out the way. I don't think it was even remotely good enough for an album. Especially not when gems such as 'Handsome Devil', 'Jeane', 'Accept Yourself', 'These Things Take Time' and 'Back to the Old House' had been B-sides.

The Lemon Twigs really are the best American band right now. Gives me so much Sunshine pop vibes from the late 60's. Great harmonies. Like The Left Banke, Sagittarius, Beach Boys, Monkeys. hell. throw in some Beatles there as well.. REALLY looking forward to their new album. The two singles that are out are killer! Catchy

I really love Jeane. Such a lovely little tune and to be honest, I prefer the one covered by Sandie Shaw to the original. A great band makes great B-sides.

Which Stevie Wonder album did you listen to ? I've heard Pet Sounds countless times over the years but as usual I go on a massive band kick occasionally and this time it was The Beach Boys - Don't Talk has to be the most underrated song of the 60s? Nothing before and after has sounded like it. Love song from another dimension.

Blind Guardian truly were special. Finishing the set with Welcome to dying and including my all time favourite from Imaginations From The other side in the set made me happy (Its true, we ARE all born in a mourning hall) Edit: Bards song which was preceded by kicking out banter and the reason I have a crappy throat and Hansi via security giving me a pick (no one was)
