I just found out the other day that Mitski just released a new album. I had no idea! Going to listen to it tonight.

Thanks for the heads up. Just pre-ordered the deluxe CD and double picture disc instead of The Masterplan reissue.

The common consensus is that the best album The Jam made was All Mod Cons. It’s a brilliant record but for me, it’s follow up, Setting Sons, is my favourite.
It’s an album like no other, hitting some hard notes as it captures a very interesting concept: how our relationships (of all kinds) influence our identity, and what happens when those relationships start to dissolve, fade away, or break down. That’s something that happens in life but I feel never gets talked about. Yet, here we have Paul Weller at - what, 23 years old? - writing songs about midlife transitions and the pain these losses give.
Thick as Thieves is the best case in point - a lifelong friendship that one day changes. The relationship fed the narrators identity and now that it’s gone? Now what? It’s the same thing with the breakdown of a marriage and domestic dream (Private Hell), an imaginary relationship that fuels an identity (Girl on the Phone), a work relationship and identity (Smithers Jones, Little Boy Soldiers). Class identity in Eton Rifles. Lots of it about outgrowing friendships - Burning Sky, Saturdays Kids. One of my personal favourites is Wasteland, which I believe should have closed the album rather than the fine but out of place Heatwave cover. I’d have put When You’re Young on at track 5 instead. It fits perfectly, thematically and sonically.
My Setting Sons edit:
1. Girl on the phone 2. Thick as thieves 3. Private hell 4. Little boy soldiers 5. When you’re young 6. Burning sky 7. Smithers Jones (I prefer the WYY b-side version) 8. Saturdays kids 9. Eton rifles 10. Wasteland
If you’re a fan of the album or curious about it, check out the demos for this album. The solo Eton Rifles is worth it alone if nothing else.
Maybe I’m reading into it but that’s what this album speaks to me. It’s potent stuff and I am constantly astounded as to how Weller could have detailed all this at his still quite young age.

This is not me obviously so I'm not shamelessly promoting here it's just some random bedroom guitarist who's appeared on peoples algorithms recently and as he isn't famous this maybe belongs in the CBGB's section but fucking hell this is great and probably one of the best amateur covers I've ever heard so I thought I'd link it to this thread for people to check out and enjoy

CJ McMahon has influenced this question: Should a band boot a member solely on their beliefs? Not saying what CJ X Tweeted was right but....

I was listening to the Jam yesterday (as I do very regularly) and after reading your comment I feel like I have to revisit Setting Sons. I've always been more attracted to All Mod Cons, Sound Affects and In the City but now it seems I've missed something.

Last thing I will say here about the CJ McMahon thing, the support group all sound like George Pig crying:
CJ got drunk again.

Either way that cover is brilliant and I'm surprised that it hasn't blown up on the internet before. Every aspect of that cover is hard, whether it's singing it in that key, playing it in time on acoustic or doing the percussion (I thought that was a drum track the first time i heard it) and yet he does all 3 effortlessly and all while changing the melody slightly in a way that I actually prefer to the original. Some people are just ridiculously talented and he's one of those people, I really hope his channel blows up on youtube.

I just got tickets to see Manic Street Preachers (and Suede, who I’m also happy to see but really excited about the Manics!) next summer.

I wish someone would remix The Jam’s discography and leave it basically the same except for turning Weller’s vocals UP!
Seriously, on some songs if his vocals were any quieter he’d sound like Kenny from South Park before Matt Stone’s voice is pitched up. That spoken word monologue at the end of ‘Set the House Ablaze’ is mostly unintelligible except for the odd word, even when listening through headphones cranked up.
I’m guessing Weller was a bit embarrassed of his boy’s voice at the beginning and mixing his vocals as low as possible just became their house style. But it’s such a shame when he went on to write such brilliant lyrics later on.

Blood on the the Tracks - Desire - Street Legal is one of my favourite runs in Dylan's career. Up there with his initial 60's masterpieces and the resurrection of Time Out of Mind - Love & Theft - Modern Times. If he adds another one to Tempest and Rough and Rowdy Ways then he'll still be dealing in some fantastic trios, for me!

Im so obsessed with finding the “perfect” ninth symphony, I’m slowly turning into Alexander DeLarge (that’s a cool movie reference I hope at least one person here will appreciate)
No but seriously the first movement is like crack to me I don’t know why I just can’t stop listening to it or telling people about it. Especially the middle part at 13:35 and the ending at 20:36. Jfc
It really was a Beethoven year for me.
