Songbird is a bit of a tune actually. But, I still think the lyrics are too simplistic... c'mon Liam, you could have done better than that even in 2001. It's not exactly "You live for your toys, even though they make noise" but it's not much better is it. Probably one of my least favourite HC tracks and I know everyone on here hates the album but whatever. Plus I always think Noel is singing "Lidl by Lidl" on LBL

Only again realised this a few days back after hearing it on the radio. Amazing cos of how many class tunes Oasis have, they are such a handful of their tunes you forget how good they are for a while.

Slide Away being on the Whatever ep, it was kind of their 5th single from DM.

I'd never heard Whatever until a long time after I got into Oasis (cos I only listened to the albums) and it was only through word of mouth I found out about it. First listen and at that time it became my favourite Oasis tune especially when I learnt it on guitar (which I can still play parts of). It's a fucking great tune and I don't care if they stole it off Neil Innes or not. The 1994 MTV Most Wanted performance of Whatever is one of my favourite ever, and probably one of if not THE best Liam vocal performances ever along with Live Forever from that session.

Because we're living fast...

Because we're living fast...But it's hardly Stevie Wonder's Uptight vs. Step Out, which is as blatant and obvious as you can get. If I was Noel, I would have just put Whatever on the album. Fuck Innes.

Because we're living fast...But it's hardly Stevie Wonder's Uptight vs. Step Out, which is as blatant and obvious as you can get. If I was Noel, I would have just put Whatever on the album. Fuck Innes. It wasn't Innes that was the problem there, he and his publishers didn't raise any issues until after Whatever had come out. IIRC it was mentioned as a possible inclusion for Definitely Maybe but with Creation Records in circa £2,000,000 worth of debt to Sony Music and the album sessions already scrapped once the budget wasn't there for them to record the string sections or anything with frills essentially. The entire record was completed for between £75,000 and £85,000, with a £60,000 UK marketing budget which was independent style money on a major backed label, so what Oasis and Owen Morris achieved with Tim Abbot marketing was actually an extraordinary success. Once the money started rolling in from the initial sales of Definitely Maybe and Sony Music could see the earnings projections they relaxed the financial restrictions somewhat, which amongst other things allowed Oasis to go back into the studio and record Whatever how Noel had envisaged it. Neil Innes version of events in a 2013 interview with Transatlantic Modern is that he got told about the the similarities by Paul McCartney's brother Michael, who had heard former BBC DJ Nicky Campbell play his tune and Whatever back to back. He spoke to EMI a while later who unbeknownst to him had already approached Creation Songs/Sony Music Publishing and got an out of court settlement for 25% of the publishing rights, giving Innes 12.5% personally. I can well believe given the experiences I've had that he knew nothing of it before the business side had already done something about it, when it comes to company earnings they aren't exactly shy or slow about it! In the same interview he mentions how Sony/ATV took control of his Rutles compositions as Beatles songs despite George Harrison approving, so it shows how the industry was dominated by accountants (I know, I know ) and lawyers.

Spinning DOYS once more. Really finding it hypnotically alluring in recent months. I don't understand how people can say it's "not Oasis" or that it "doesn't sound like Oasis." Bollocks. Short on the anthems, sure, but it's Oasis right to its core.
DBTT hasn't aged well, but DOYS shows it's predecessor how to boldly and ambitiously rock out. The Turning is almost up there with the likes of Go Let It Out - that solo!

The Nature of Reality is still utter shit. Wouldn't be out of place on the second half of Heathen Chemistry.

Slide Away being on the Whatever ep, it was kind of their 5th single from DM. totally get what you mean. had it been another album song there, I would skip.. but I always found myself listening to the whole fucking song.. it just fits there. last track released/listed from the DM era... (and the next one was going to be Some Might Say..!) like a huge thank you to the fans and a big fuck off to the haters.

I had a friend who took a lot of joy of breaking the news of Oasis' split to me. He's a dick and no longer my friend.

I also love that Slide Away is on Whatever but I also find it quite strange; it's almost as if it was originally meant to be a double a-side but for some reason people forgot to do the correct promo and it just got left as b-side.
Can't actually think why a song which had been released 4 months before would just be a b-side.

For anyone who didn't already own definitely maybe hearing Slide Away must have been a good kick up the arse to actually go out and pick up the album.

my thought for oasis is the monumental fuck ups is what makes them what they are and i wouldnt want it any other way tbh its what stop them form being business men and makes them rockstars Sorry to be a dour bastard and burst the bubble but businessmen and women make a lot of fuck ups too, and the brothers amongst other things are certainly businessmen who have achieved financial and music related success beyond anything either probably imagined, as Noel said himself to a question at 1.16:- alright i probably phrased it wrong the fuck up make the whole story what it is

How old are ya, Sonny Jim? Yeah me and him are about the same age.... In all seriousness hurtling on towards my fifth decade (i.e. past 40 mark) so when that happens I will reunite the late 90s/early 00s Tenerife holdiay crew and show John Lydon & Co. how a "Fat, Forty and Back!" tour should really be done!
