My mind needs refreshing. Any stories about it anywhere, or has anyone got any information about it? I think I remember reading ages ago that Liam brought a crowd of people back from a pub to the studio sessions for WTSMG, and Noel lost his head or something.

think that was the cricket bat incident, he legendary cricket bat used by Noel Gallagher of Oasis to attack his brother, Liam, in a famous incident during the recording of the second Oasis album, “What’s The Story, Morning Glory.” As detailed in numerous articles and books about the band, Liam Gallagher brought a group of inebriated people he’d met at a local pub to the band’s recording sessions for “Morning Glory,” infuriating Noel. Noel forced the people to leave, which caused Liam to “lose it” and attack Noel and his guitars, and Noel retaliated using this cricket bat. We obtained this bat from celebrated British music writer Paolo Hewitt. As detailed in his letter of authenticity, Hewitt is the author of sixteen books on music and music related subjects, including the authorized biography of Oasis, “Getting High: The Adventures of Oasis” (the cricket bat incident is detailed on page 320 of Hewitt’s book, a copy of which is included.) Noel Gallagher’s blurb on the book cover says it all–“Paolo is the only person to speak about what it was like on the road with us because he’s been there. He’s been there, he’s seen it, he’s done it.” During interviews for the book, Noel Gallagher pointed out the cricket bat to Hewitt, and convinced it was destined for the trash, he took it home. This is a truly a unique artifact from one of the most successful British bands ever, with full authentication, and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. recordmecca.com/item-archives/oasis-cricket-bat-used-by-noel-gallagher-on-liam-gallagher/

I think I remember reading ages ago that Liam brought a crowd of people back from a pub to the studio sessions for WTSMG, and Noel lost his head or something. Oasis recording infoThere's some info in there from Owen Morris on his recollections of the incident. IIRC Liam had got the hump with Noel taking lead vocals on Don't Look Back In Anger and gone off to nearby Monmouth on what became a pub crawl interspersed with autograph signings and a shopping trip that included Nirvana- Unplugged (ironic given the "sad c*nt" quote about Kurt Cobain and a jumper. The version given in 1995 to Paolo Hewitt which he reprinted in "Getting High" was Liam phoned up the studio more than once to call Owen and Noel "wankers" and make general drunken threats about "getting them later". The fight allegedly kicked off when Noel ordered everyone out, and insulted a girl who Liam had wanted to stay. Liam promptly went beserk upending tables, plant pots and other furniture whilst Whitey and Bonehead rushed to Guigsy's room to remove a pair of air rifles the bassist had brought for "recreation" in order to stop the enraged singer grabbing them! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/1258801/images/7QKGdm487eYnX65W8w0g.gif) unfortunately they missed the other item Guigs had brought, one solid cricket bat.... Liam then according to Paolo and Owen went for the studio to smash up Noel's guitars (history precursor) but was frustrated by the heavy locked doors and bars on the windows, so instead traded punches with Bonehead. This was the point Noel attacked him with the aforementioned cricket bat before going back to his room. Liam tried to kick Noel;'s door in but succeeded only in injuring his foot. It was on the ground floor so while Liam was venting at the door Noel climbed out of the window, went round the front and asked if anyone could drive, which Whitey volunteered for. As they were driving away Whitey recalls Liam emerging enraged and throwing a plastic dustbin at his bonnet, which bounced off wirthout damaging the car. Alan White later recalled Noel on the way to London saying that Liam had acted like their father, and he was going to quit and do his own thing, which Alan thought he was deadly serious about at the time. The actual damage to the studio wasn't that bad considering, after Guigsy of all people cleaned up it was a door of the hinges, broken table and smashed drinks machine & TV, which they simply billed the band for. Noel went to Paul Weller's "Stanley Road" release party before escaping to Jersey with Meg, during which time Owen Morris sent him mixes of Roll With It and Hello, which alongside taking time to reflect and talking to Marcus Russell persuaded him to rejoin the band at Rockfield Studios nearly five weeks later. According to Owen they finished the album in the two weeks remaining without fuss, which included Noel writing and rewriting the words to Cast No Shadow as Liam completed vocal retakes of it as the words changed. It's a great shame they couldn't have worked like this more often rather than the fights that ultimately led to their demise.

Here's a somewhat different version of events from an interview with the band Cable: www.bandplanet.co.uk/forgottenbandplanet/cable/cablebiography.htm"One of the other things John Robb mentioned in passing when I interviewed him a while ago was that Cable and Oasis got into a bit of fracas at Rockfield recording studio. Pete: "There are several incidents that have taken place between Cable and the Mancunian five piece. This particular episode took place when said Gallagher had invited us back to a party at their studio...(we were recording next door.) Liam was playing a tape of "What's the story..." to the first human other than the five members of the band and Owen Morris and Darius [guitar] told him it sounded just like the Beatles and was a total fucking rip-off, the worst form of lowest common denominator trash. Not the best way to have answered the question, what with us being guests and all, but hey, at least he was honest! Naturally a somewhat drunken scuffle ensued, as we all looked on. The two were too drunk to fight properly which only added to the fun, which was spoiled by Bonehead who punched an off-guard Darius to the ground. Then they got the hunting rifles out that they had hired that day and Jonn Robb in his infinate wisdom decided it was time Darius left and carried him back to our studio. No-one enjoys being shot at. Something to tell your children, I suppose. But not half as queer as what happened the next time we met... "The first time we met them was in 1994, when we supported them at their Derby show on their first tour of the UK after signing to creation. The last time we met them was at the Astoria after we had supported Ash. They were at the after-show. The support slot to them is nothing to speak of, other than the fact that they were fairly rude and difficult to work round. The Astoria meeting was even more bizarre than the Rockfield incident, however. Liam and Bonehead just sidled over to me and goes "Hey mate how's it goin'". I'm thinking "Fuck, they're still sore after Darius threw pasta salad all over their kitchen and told them they were shit and now they're gonna kick my head in." So I said "I'm alright lads, how are you?" Liam: "It is you innit?" Me: "What do you mean?" Liam: " What was cheeky'n that and knackered our tea and caused me my bruvver to have a scrap n'that." Me:"...er yeh, sorry about that..." Liam: "Fuckit. It were a top laugh. We nearly split up that night. Our Noel says I was out of order for hittin' your mate, so we had a fight." And that was it. He didn't give a shit. Him and Noel had had a massive row that night causing Noel to leave the studio and drive home to London. It was in all the tabloids, I'm sure you'll remember, when Noel walked out of recording "What's the story..." But all the papers had said that they had invited some local lads back to the studio, not the band who were next door. A press opportunity missed out on? The band that almost finished Oasis? No wonder that replacement bass player didn't last long and no wonder the other one was fucked in the first place. No wonder the original drummer was fired. From being a fly on the wall both before and after their success, being in Oasis just can't be any fun, I'm sure. They can bearly get on with each other, let alone anyone else, and the cocaine consumption was ridiculous".

Bloody heck I forgot about Cable- I remember John Robb saying about that incident a few years back. IIRC on a side note I saw Cable and an unknown Travis supporting Reef in 1997 at the Assembly Rooms in Derby. Can't remember the album Cable were pushing, but I do remember the sleeve had the memorable line "All lyrics written in a bakery in Derby!"

And just think, the resulting album became one of the biggest selling of all time.
