If you're talking music biopics, I'd recommend a few here that I think are good films in their own right (not just films based on good artists). WALK THE LINE - JOHNNY CASH BACKBEAT - STUART SUTCLIFFE & THE EARLY BEATLES I'M NOT THERE - BOB DYLAN AMADEUS - MOZART (seriously, the Liam Gallagher of his time) EIGHT MILE - EMINEM I'd also throw in the extended cut of ALMOST FAMOUS. Not sure of it technically counts as a biopic, but most of the characters are based on real people, some of whom have their names changed for the film, some don't. I think if you're an Oasis fan you'll find something to like in all those films. the aviator with leonardo dicaprio... A boy playing a man. Probably one of the worst casting decisions on history.

Nowhere Boy (2009). About John Lennon. I liked it
There is also one called "Control" (2007) which I haven't seen but has good critics. About Ian Curtis (Joy Divison)

Nowhere Boy (2009). About John Lennon. I liked it As did I. An interesting ride for me was Cadillac Records (2008) Some cut and paste info > "Cadillac Records" chronicles the rise of Leonard Chess' (Adrien Brody) Chess Records and its recording artists including Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Little Walter (Columbus Short), Chuck Berry (Mos Def), Willie Dixon (Cedric The Entertainer) and the great Etta James (Beyonce Knowles). In this tale of sex, violence, race and rock and roll in Chicago of the 1950s and 60s, the film follows the exciting but turbulent lives of some of America's greatest musical legends

The Motorcycle Diaries. One of my favourite films all the time. Mine too. Tremendous and eye opening. Loved the book as well. A music film I love is 24 Hour Party People. All about the Manchester music scene from 1977 to early 90s

Control by Anton Corbijn is a great film too. I've read the book "Touching From A Distance" by Ian Cutis' widow Deborah, but it was much much darker than the film.

I recommend you to watch Control. It's made by Anton Corbijn - a Dutch photographer. He did a great job with this film.
