vs Elton...though only because he has continued to be very productive for over 40 years, whilst Bowie did a disappearing act and has turned into a recluse and a non artist (though he has just released a superb new album right out of the blue, though he has done nothing to promote it)....as great songwriters I couldn't choose between them. tai nhac chuong

Both great artists with extensive back catalogues, but Elton has never written a lyric in his life (even when he released a tribute song to his recently deceased friend, John Lennon), and Bowie always has. And he doesn't just knock off any old shite that rhymes either...
Every time I thought I'd got it made, It seemed the taste was not so sweet. So I turn myself to face me, But I've never caught a glimpse Of how the others must see the faker; I'm much too fast to take that test.
I watch the ripples change their size, But never leave the stream of warm impermanence, and So the days float though my eyes, But still the days seem the same... And these children that you spit on as they try to change their worlds, Are immune to your consultations, They're quite aware what they're going through.
Ch- ch- ch- ch- changes; turn and face the strain Ch- ch- changes; don't tell them to grow up and out of it! Ch- ch- ch- ch- changes; turn and face the strain Ch- ch- changes; where's your shame you've left us up to our necks in it!? Time may change me But you can't trace time
There's a brand new dance, But I don't know its name, The people from bad homes Do again and again. It's big and it's bland, Full of tension and fear. They do it over there, but we don't do it here...
Fashion! Turn to the left... Fashion! Turn to the right...
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky - We know Major Tom's a junkie Strung out in heaven's high, Hitting an all-time low.
Time and again I tell myself I'll stay clean tonight, But the little green wheels are following me Oh, no, not again...
I'm stuck with a valuable friend "I'm happy. Hope you're happy, too." One flash of light, But no smoking pistol
I will be king And you, you will be queen. Though nothing will drive them away, We can be heroes, just for one day. We can be us, just for one day.
I can remember Standing by the wall, And the guns shot above our heads, And we kissed As though nothing could fall. And the shame was on the other side! Oh, we can beat them, for ever and ever! Then we could be heroes, Just for one day...
When you factor in the way Bowie's changed his sound from record to record, and his astronomical impact on other artists, for me, there's just no competition. Bowie all day long.

David Bowie. Possibly the most unique artist in the history of modern music, and a fabulous songwriter into the bargain.

I'm really suprised that you'd even ask this question. Especially on this forum.

There's only one answer and it isn't Elton John. No contest really.

Haven't seen anything other than "wanker" about Elton though. I'm not sure that's exclusive to this forum, I think it's just that ol' Redge is a wanker, and David Bowie is fucking awesome. Although, Noely G speaking so openly about his respect for Bowie probably helps...

Favourite album by each? I'd go with 'Life On Mars?' and 'Goodbye Yellowbrick Road.' It's easy to slate Elt but at his peak in the Early 70s (coincidentally the same time as Bowie's) he was a phenomenal pop craftsman, in terms of his melodies and chord structures. He's also played The Falkirk Stadium which gives him a point over Bowie. Unfortunately he's turned into a professional celebrity and appears to have lost his magic, whereas Bowie is still effortlessly cool.
