Apologies if I'm a bit behind the times here but has anyone else listened to Ryan Adams cover album of Taylor Swift's album 1989?
I bought it the other day and can't stop playing it, I think it's really good. I've always liked Adams work and first got into him back in 2004 when he released love is hell, what an album that is!
I got his self titled album last year and thought that was good too. He is a really prolific song writer

He is a terrific songwriter, his 1989 cover is incredible.
That self-titled album he did last year is one of my favourite of 2014, its an incredible album so for anyone who hasn't listened, do it!

I'm listening to the album right now. He really made the songs his own, didn't he? I wasn't really impressed with his Wonderwall cover, for me nothing comes close to the original version, but I do think he did a decent job with this. Highlights for me are: Style - I was surprised how good it sounds, All You Had To Do Was Stay; Shake it Off - sounds refreshing, after hearing the Taylor version for a billion times, a change is welcome ... and I think I prefer his version of Wildest Dreams, to be honest! I wish you would is gorgeous as well... Oh I think I'll have this on repeat for a while I didn't find Out Of The Woods that amazing, to be honest, which makes me a bit sad because it's one of my favourites from 1989 album. Perhaps I need to give it another listen... Same goes for How You Get The Girl - found it a bit boring. However - this is quite good.

Haven't listened to it yet but I'm looking forward to it as I'm a big Ryan Adams fan.
That guy has a lot of talent, and he's using it quite a lot. In the last year he released something like one full album and half a dozen of EPs...

One of the hardest working guys out there. I've not heard the album yet, only Bad Blood, which was good. Will have to listen soon.

I quite like this album, Bad Blood and Wildest Dreams are probably the highlights, but much prefer Swift's version.

Ok, I'm starting the listening party. I've made a playlist with original versions alternated with Ryan's covers. Let's see how this goes... Also, it's the first time I listen to a whole Taylor Swift record from start to finish

Taylor's album so far sounds like a watered-down early Avril Lavigne album with some hints of Katy Perry. There are some promising songs buried underneath that rotten marshmallow-flavored production, though.
The original Shake It Off is awful imho, but Ryan's version is really really good.

More than anything, I really like the fact that this is a genuine cover album. You can tell Ryan really respects Taylor as a songwriter, which honestly she should be. She's one of the best pop melodists of the past decade. Her subject material is a pretty basic and somewhat cliche take on heartbreak and all that jazz, but she knows who she is as an artist, and I can respect that. In addition to that she's also got a bit of personality in her tunes. Watching her develop into a legitimate popstar has kinda been one of the most remarkable developments in pop music over the course of the past decade.
Back to Ryan's version of this. Its pretty enjoyable, nothing really more than that but that's really all it should be. I've seen a lot of criticism of questions why this exists and how lacking it is musically it is. I think they are kinda missing the point. Covers used to mean something and it was really cool back in the day to hear artists reinterpret songs. Like Jimi doing Dylan, or the Isley Brothers covering Dylan, Neil Young, Hendrix on their truly astonishing covers record Givin' it Back.
Nowadays you just have bands doing "ironic" covers of pop songs, or really dark/somber versions of them. That shit gets, and has gotten boring. Yeah, these songs have a Ryan Adams lens on them, but there's a deeper connection to the material. Taylor and Ryan are totally different personalities and make different styles of music, but I think as songwriters they share a similar way of perceiving the world. Although stylistically and sonically their music my be different their songs share a lot of sentiment and they are both rooted in a deep understanding of classic pop songwriting.

I've never intentionally listened to Taylor Swift so I can't comment on her original version but Ryan has done a great job with his re-imagination, sounds like one of his own albums.
Now get Blackhole out finally!
