Noel and Liam speak about the incident during the wibbling rivalry interview. Noel also mentions the story during an interview with Steve lamacq and jo whiley on BBC Radio 1 celebrating ten years of definitely maybe in 2004.
I believe what happened was that in sometime around february 1994 the band were on their way to The Netherlands to do a gig with the verve and Liam, bonehead and maybe tony and guigs got into a fight with some football fans who were on their way to a match. Noel was asleep in a room so missed it all and then spent a few days in Amsterdam with the verve. The rest of the band were taken straight back to the UK on the returning ferry.
The verve played in Amsterdam in 18th February 1994 so this incident could have happened the day before on the 17th when travelling over.

Yes that's right. Liam mentions the incident in an interview on the the Definitely Maybe DVD in 2004 saying that he was locked in a room on the ship with just a bucket to use as a toilet after rowing with police who challenged him and threatening, "It'll take 10 of you to take me down."
"They locked me in a room with a mattress and a bucket.
"I'd been drinking and was p***ing like a tw*t. It was swilling about."

They were on the way to Amsterdam (in fact to Hoek van Holland) by ferry to support The Verve in Paradiso. On the same ferry there were English football supporters too and they got into a fight with them except Noel who went to the cabine to sleep earlier. Noel recall in the interview on radio later like "When I woke up, there was nobody, but only me and our manager". Except Noel, they were sent back to England straight away.

I'm uploading Noel at Radio 1 Lamacq live (Definitely Maybe Special) back in 2004 right now.
It was the West Ham supporters on the same ferry for Westham/PSV match who got into fight with Liam, Guigsy, Bonehead and Tony. They were arrested and sent back to England straight away. Noel spent alone (with roadie and manager) in Amsterdam for 2 days.

Pretty sure that West Ham story is bollocks, as it was in February they wouldn't be playing friendlies mid-season, and they weren't in Europe that season either. They might have been some West Ham hooligans, who knows.

Would have had to have been a supporter's day out if they were, quick check of WHU history shows they weren't in Europe & didn't play PSV in any capacity.

I just posted what Noel said during the show...but I'm not bothered if it was West Ham or not. You can listen to him talking about this ferry incident in part 4 of the file I uploaded on S&V.

I think it may have been a under 21 or under 19 game but I can't find any reference to it either. It would have been nice to know as we could have worked out the approximate date it happened.for our records. I believe the incident might have been mentioned in either or both the Qmagazine or NME oasis specials published in 2002. Mine are in the loft, I'll have to dig them out and have a look. very sad I know, but I do like to know the facts behind the oasis story.

It's odd but I'm re-reading "Getting High- The Adventures of Oasis" by Paolo Hewitt from 1996 where the incident is reported as security being called on the ferry because band members and entourage had stolen champagne from the duty free shop and were openly drinking it in the bar. Liam in the same book also claims he was made to lie in a cell for three hours by a guard without moving- maybe an embellishment but hardly the WHU fans and fighting Liam talk stories that seemed to emerge alot later. Interestingly in the same book they openly state that the story of Alan McGee pouring JD over his head on hearing Supersonic for the first time came about from McGee sitting down with a drink on a chair at BBC Maida Vale to watch them perform, when the chair collapsed, spilling the drink down his white jeans. Noel then turned this into the now well quoted story. They also admit the story of Bonehead stealing Jackie Stewart's golf cart and air rifle at Gleneagles to shoot trees was told as a straight lie by Noel to Johnny Hopkins, who managed to con The Mirror into printing it as a factual story, enhancing their reputation within the media as well as with the wider public. I think these are just a few examples of Oasis, and Noel in particular, creating or rewriting history a bit in order to establish their mythology. Nothing wrong with that as they aren't the first or last band to do it. It certainly beats Chris Martin charming small animals before singing to Live 8 and then indulging in some "conscious uncoupling" (Is that the part of bad sex after you've finished where it's really awkward as you move apart?) Sad we may be mate, and we definitely have too much time on our hands

Another story the band embellished was the gig at king tuts wah wah hut where the band said they turned up at the venue and the promoter said "I've never heard of u, you're not playing tonight" the band then say there was a bit of a Mexican stand off and the promoter thought better of it and let them play. Alan McGee was at the gig and then offered them a contract.

Just been listening to the BBC Radio 1 evening session Definitely Maybe annaverary special in 2004.
The ferry incident according to Noel from the evening session (I thing Noel is embellishing the truth somewhat here but it sounds great anyway) The band are on their way to the Netherlands on an overnight ferry to play a gig with the verve. Also on the ferry are fans of West Ham who are playing a pre season friendly against Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. (I believe this incident happened in early January/February 1994 so it couldn't have been a preseason friendly as such. The verve's gigographies show them playing a gig at the arena in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on 18th February 1994. Oasis had no gigs around this time. It all kicked off on the ferry and Noel and mark coyle ran back to their room and hid until it finished. There was bedlam with people running around the ship kicking doors in and smashing things up. The rest of the band were locked in the ship and taken back home.
Other interesting notes Supersonic recorded on possibly 19th or 21st December 1993 at the Pink Museum Studios in Liverpool, the night before the band played a session for BBC Radio 1 evening session. They played, amongst others, up in the sky acousticly with Liam singing. The session was broadcast on 22/12/1993.

Have just been in my loft and found the Q Magazine Oasis special edition from 2002 and it states that the ferry incident happened on 8th February 1994. The band were due to play their first foreign gig at the Sleepin Arena in Amsterdam, the Netherlands supporting the verve.
I think this is a mistake and it was actually 18th February 1994 as the Verve played a gig at the Sleepin Arena in Amsterdam on that date.

Alan McGee was at the gig and then offered them a contract. Noel had already met Alan McGee at Shoom during the rave era, apparently a girl he was dating called Hannah worked at Creation as a p/t cleaner, with Noel in London during roadie periods. According to Mr Hewitt once more the stand off only went as far as the band saying they had brought a load of people up who would either be pissed off at no gig, or would spend money at the bar if they played. Alan McGee himself says that he waited for them to reemerge in the bar after their brief show, then approached Mark Coyle as he knew him from the Inspiral Carpets, who in turn directed him to Noel.

The verve played in Amsterdam in 18th February 1994 so this incident could have happened the day before on the 17th when travelling over. This is almost certainly the correct date (February 17, 1994). In Supersonic, Phil Smith says it was a "Thursday overnight ferry" to Amsterdam. February 17, 1994 was a Thursday. The Verve gig in Amsterdam is definitely February 18, so the 17th seems like the correct date based on all the evidence in this thread and Phil's memories.

One more piece of evidence to support the 18th as the date of the gig: live4ever.proboards.com/post/1307092/thread. That picture is supposedly from the day after and you can see the date of the Oasis/Verve gig listed as February 18.
