Comparing like for like, two behemoths on each respective album.
Shit production aside, If I Had A Gun is a tune. Probably the more sentimental of the two. Quintessential Noel.
The Dying of the Light is more layered, proper production, and good lyrics, too. Might over stay it's welcome a wee bit.
Tough one. Your call.

The Dying Of The Light.
It recently dawned on my that IIHAG is a plodding load of shite, the production is appalling aswell. Horrible.

I love IIHAG, my only problem with it is that the drums should've come in AFTER the first "ooh-ooh-ooh" and the "ah-ah-ah" should've been the last thing before the concluding verse. TDOTL has better lyrics, but IIHAG barely slips past it due to its simplicity which works surprisingly well. But these two really are neck and neck!!

The Dying of the Light, no doubt.
The finished version of IIHAG is a real mess (Sardy, anyone?) and it doesn't work that well live (the plodding drums ruin every performance). It is great in acoustic though.
On the other hand, I think TDOTL is the best "Wonderwall rehash" we had so far: the album version is stunning imho, with its multi-layered soundscape. Very emotional.

I loved the soundcheck of TDOTL but now barely ever listen to the album version. IIHAG may have worse production but I still prefer it.

I think the fact that we've been expecting The Dying of the Light for a while has somewhat dulled it's impact - if we hadn't heard it before Chasing Yesterday I think it would have got a rapturous reception.
"I was told, That the streets were paved with gold, And there'd be no time for getting old, While we were young. But it's alright, If you dance with me tonight, We'll fight the dying of the light, And we'll catch the sun."
These are some of the finest lyrics Noel has ever written, combine that with the gorgeous melody and the unspeakably superior production and it's not a competition IMO.

iihag has one of the most beatiful melody changes (or whatever you want to call it) i've ever heard. not even dave sardy can destroy that.
i'm talking about the ''scuse me if i spoke too son' part. the first time i listend to it, i wanted to cry like an overly attached fan, but i didn't.

Great mention. There are a couple of A-Game Noel Gallagher left hooks in the track that break up the song's composition really well and add to the building progression superbly. This maybe amongst the most typically Noel-esque tracks out there, but it's surprisingly sharp in the hook department something that a punchier and more dynamic production should have highlighted. The sudden impact of the initial " Aaaaa-Aaaaa-Aa-aa-ah..." combined with the sudden crunch (or what should have been a crunch... Sardy ) of guitar is a great turn which The Dying Of The Light certainly doesn't contain. The echoing " Away, Away, Away..." is fucking spot on too (song-wise though not quite sonically). Ultimately all the only thing that's really missing is the production. Sardy's hamfisted-plodding-boring production has certainly left its mark with some people (and the album in general) but song wise I reckon NGHFB holds it's own against Chasing Yesterday and surpasses it more often than I think people care to acknowledge. A combination of being almost utterly predictable + poor production against Noel dipping his toes into something a little different + far better production has left people a little unbalanced I think (not to mention it's the new kid on the block). Give it a few years and I predict things will even out... we'll see. Oh and The Dying Of The Light? Another very typical Noel track under a (IMO) unwarranted, meh, piano addition. Less hooks and more predictable turns. In Bloom blows it to smithereens.

Agreed. I think it's vintage Noely G. One of the best songs he's written in the last fifteen years I reckon. Interesting that you bring the lyrics up, of course the chorus is great, but looking over the verses again... I keep on running but I can't get to the mountain, Behind me lie the years that I've misspent. And I've been sinking like a flower in the fountain...Woke up sleeping on a train that was bound for nowhere, The echoes that I could hear were all my own. The world had turned and I'd become a stranger, And I'm tired of watching all the flowers turn to stone.Haven't thought of it before, but doesn't this sound a lot like Noel is lamenting Oasis' declining popularity/creative output/critical acclaim etc.? We know Noel wrote it on the DOYS tour, and his wife, Sara, has said it's "his most honest song." There's no longer any doubt Noel WAS looking for a way out shortly before the bust up, so is the song therefore Noel's acknowledgement that the band must come to an end (dying of the light), because it's not what it once seemed (I was told the streets were paved with gold...when we were young) and now that he's aware of time moving on (getting old) he knows he must seek pastures new i.e. a solo career to reignite the flame creatively (thickhead music journos never mentioned it of course, but surely "woke up sleeping on train that was bound for nowhere" is a metaphor for stagnation if I've ever seen one!) and commercially (I'd become a stranger) Either that's nonsense, or I've just blown my own mind. Can't tell. However, the fact that a Noel Gallagher lyric can be read into at all is a welcome change from the norm ( 'Scuse me if I spoke to soon, my eyes have always followed you around the room, Cause you're the only God that I will ever need... )

The production of TDOTL makes it way more special than the pop bland of IIHAG.

I like If I Had A Gun, particularly the 2009 soundcheck snippet and then the demo, but the album version is the biggest screw up of a love ballad I've ever seen. At least TDOTL's album version doesn't sound overproduced for my ears. Every instrumentation works while IIAG all of a sudden at the 40 second mark kicks into loud drums that don't even need to be part of the mix.

Anyway, TDOTL is less cheesy than if IIHAG, and more interesting. That's why I chose it in the end. Also, I think I listened to IIHAG demo too many times (I was obsessed with it), so the final version never really "clicked" with me properly... I don't know. I do love that line, though.

Not a big fan of either, but I still like that haunting sound check version of IIHAG so I went with that.

Well, I never consider a musical piece to be better than other but as a matter of taste I prefer IIAHAG. TDOTL is a great song though!
