"...have begun the biggest chart war in thirty years; the Manchester band Oasis and their arch rivals blur released new singles today, each hoping to reach the number one spot next week. The music industry hasn't seen anything like it, since the Beatles fought it out with the Rolling Stones in the sixties."

Two young bands releasing catchy, guitar-based pop tunes and vying for the number one spot in the charts. Both with instant appeal, and, in my opinion, both have stood the test of time. And both bands had far better material on their respective albums from that year as well! What a time for British music.

Why did they have to be known as "the Manchester band," like them hailing from somewhere north of Watford makes them some sort of oddity?

Here's another clip on the chart battle, this time from Newsround. Includes a Liam interview clip recorded for the O-Zone.

"...the result of the contest will come on Sunday, when the weeks number one will be announced. The only thing people seem sure of, is that it'll no longer be Take That." HA!
I long for the day when we'll hear, "The only thing people seem sure of, is that it'll no longer be One Direction." How will that come about though, Catfish & The Battlemen and Jake Bugg releasing singles in the same week? I think not.

We have to remember that til that point Blur were more popular than Oasis, another thing is that they release two different versions of the Country House single, which was a bit unfair I think.

Roll with It is by far the worst song on MG, had Oasis released Wonderwall in RWI's place, Blur wouldn't have stood a chance. However I'm a big fan of Country House, a real tune right there!

Blur may have won the battle, but Oasis won the war. Not only did they have way more success than Blur in general, WTSMG alone sold more than Blur's complete discography.

Would give my left ball for having lived in england at that time working in the music business in whatever way. Coke, booze, sex, great music all the time for at least 2 years

And that's just where sales are concerned. Everyone (but the stuffy, London-based music press in Britain) knows that ...Morning Glory was a far superior album to The Great Escape. Again, song for song, I'd personally say it's better than anything Blur ever put out.

I think you shouldn't judge a band on their sales but on their music

After the chart race was over Ignition and Creation both stated that the barcodes were misprinted on a batch of singles. Michael Spencer Jones also states this on the recordings info site under "Roll With It" Roll With It info
