I know, I don't understand either. I think it has got something to do with him sitting down, so he doesn't put any pressure on his larynx. He sounds better than most shows from the BHN tour. It's still a mystery to me, because it shows that all the smoking and drinking haven't really affected his voice?
His voice always sounds very clear and strong when he's sitting down (e.g his 3FM Radio performance and GGTIA on some Irish show I think: ), although in the last example he has raised the microphone a bit too high which forces him to sing with his head up, so he can't sing to his full potential.

I don't buy the smoke and drink thing
So many singers smoke and drink.
I think his singing style put way too much strain on his vocal chords.... When he's sitting down and singing softly he can control it. But when he's live and yelling it's not as good.

the 3fm session sounded really good to me, i think he still has it in there, probably his new 'shoutin the last word of every line'kind of style (which i like by the way!) is more powerfull to him
