Seems like a lot of people here and just the public in general have different definitions of rock n' roll (hell look whose in the "rock n' roll" hall of lame) and that's what's splitting the room.
The Beatles for me has always been more of a pop band than a rock band, because their sense of melody always triumphed over raw power and attitude that characterizes most of rock n roll, but more importantly the beatles transcended genres. An album like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band isn't really a "rock n' roll" album if you really think about it in a traditional sense, however it revolutionized what pop/rock band could do in the studio. It opened new doors for the genre. But songs like Lovely Rita, Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!, etc are pop tunes at heart and there's a certain group of people who might take offense if you called them rock songs, and I see where they are coming from.

For me, the Beatles are the greatest band of all time. Not my personal favourites (although they are probably number 2 after Oasis), but certainly the greatest.

Nothing wrong with pop songs. Of course there's tons of rubbish fake pop songs in past and these days, but there's also lots of great timeless pop songs. Think about all those great job done by Phil Spector.
The Smiths - my life time band, have never been a "rock" band, not to me anyway.

Hmmm, though one... Abbey Road more timeless, yes, without a doubt. But, if you compare the level both albums, well it is not evident. I consider that Abbey Road has 4 great songs : Something, Here Comes The Sun, Come Together and Because (+the medley)pretty good songs (Oh Darling!, I Want You!) and shitty ones (Maxwel, hmm...) Pepper has strong highlights (A Day In The Life, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds) some not too good songs (Good Morning, Good Morning; Lovely Rita)and some underrated gems (She's Leaving Home, Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite) Both are their qualities and are brilliant. Lille preference for the Pepper Anyway, White Album Forever IF it didn't have Revolution 9 on it...

The genius of the Beatles in their "kiddy pop" years was that their songs were just so incredibly layered and beautifully crafted. The way they handled harmonies and melodies was just brilliant and in the 60's it was something else to have such complex and brilliantly composed and arranged songs. That is the reason their pop albums still stand strong among their later more progressive work. As for Sgt. Pepper, I'm sorry but it is simply one of, if not the greatest album of all time(the only other album that'd come close is Abbey Road or Dark Side). It was brilliant in the 60's and it is brilliant now for the simple reason that it pushed the envelope. To me, Sgt. Pepper was the first great "Rock" album. The sheer genius of the songs and the juxtaposition between Lennon and McCartney's songwriting is another reason for its greatness in my opinion. Not only that, it contains probably the greatest song of all time, A Day In The Life. The album is such a great mix of psychadellia and rock, the likes of which had never been seen before. It ventured into a musical landscape which was unheard of at the time. The distorted guitars, the orchestral arrangements, the stereo imaging and Indian instruments are just some of the innovations on the album. If you're a guitar player and you've attemp to play the songs from this album or any of their work, you'll see a whole new layer to the music which makes you appreciate the work of the Beatles and this record even more. Which is one of the reasons this record is cited as an influence by so many countless musicians. Apart from that I'm pretty sure this one album has influenced more pop culture, music, fashion, etc. than all the Stones' work combined. The thing with the Stones was that they never pushed the envelope. The Beatles were always innovating and trying out new things whereas I've not heard the Stones do anything like that. Now that isn't a slight on them but this innovation is what makes the Beatles a far superior band. They started off as a pop/rock n roll band and over the years evolved into the pioneers of rock. And the number of genres they've ventured into is quite astounding and in my opinion they've never experimented just for the sake of it, they've always nailed whatever genre they attempted and pioneered some of the genres on the way, be it pop, folk-rock, experimental music, rock or psychedelia. I find it ammusing that the Stones had the image of rebels whereas the Beatles were the so called good guys. Musically speaking it was quite the opposite, The Beatles were most definitely the rebels. So the Beatles did more for music in the 10 years they were together than the Rolling Stones have done for the 50+ years they've been together in my opinion. I understand not everyone has to "get" the Beatles but dismissing them outright is just being daft. first off. Welcome back ...second off. I disagree , but what else so new ...lol

Woah.
I don't even know where to begin here. I don't give a fuck if people like the Beatles or not, that's their loss, but to say they weren't innovative, just made pop, weren't a good band etc. is just plain ignorant. It shows you don't know anything about them. Even their popsongs were very different from what was coming out at the time, touching different subjects, layering the songs in a different way, attracting a wider audience by using more words as he/she/you..
I'm not even going to defend them and write a whole essay about why and how and when, because a lot of people have already done that in this thread, and way better than I would ever be able to, but The Beatles are the most influential group EVER and there's a reason for that. The Stones were great, don't get me wrong. I saw them live and enjoyed it, but they should've stopped decades ago. And for The Stones to call Sgt Pepper shit or the Beatles derivative is simply laughable. Bitter c*nts. Keith is awesome but damn, is he full of shit or what

I don't think there's any worthwhile argument that the The Beatles weren't the greatest band of all time (if you are to invest in such a concept), you can hate every single song they ever put out but their incredible legacy is simply untouchable. As for Keith, it is odd to call an album like Sgt. Pepper's a "mishmash of rubbish", but that's his opinion. What would be truly ridiculous would be if he doubted its importance or significance.

It was the 60's.....

I think The Beatles are the greatest, they are the kings of melody and innovation, but it's not a crime to prefer other bands over The Beatles, and I can see why many prefer other bands than them.
I used to defend the Beatles at every opportunity, on internet or with friends, saying the they are much better than Led Zep, Stones and others...
I still think that Beatles are the greatest, but now I much prefer listenning to Led Zep or Stones over them, it may be because I heard the Beatles too much or that the Stones songs are rawer, dunno exactly.
Also I can't stand anymore the Beatles early albums, buy me love, hold hands, need love... too saccharine for my tastes, but I love them after Help.
