matt knows his onions
The Stones as great as they are and much i like them were just a blues band. Nothing wrong with that either BTW. But Jagger , Richards, Brian Jones just had nowhere near the ears or imagination for melody that Lennon & McCartney and to a lesser extent Harrison naturally had for melody. Very few people ever have.
Not being disrecptful to anyone but anyone who knows music will acknowledge that. I'm always very suspicious of people who say Beatles were crap or even overated.
BUt each to their own i guess

If Keith wants to comment about musical rubbish he need look no further than every single Rolling Stones album since 1974. Some Girls is an awesome album, Tatoo You is great and Black and Blue is underrated.I would say that they were crap after Tatoo You, but I guess that The Beatles would be shit if they carried on for more 20 years too, the thing is that The Stones didn't stop at the right time unlike The Beatles. THANK YOU, finally someone agrees with me

I bloody love the Beatles, and honestly believe abbey road is their best ALBUM, just works so great together and is a joy to listen to start to finish, sgt pepper is of course brilliant too, I've seen someone else on here say it but I don't think the stones ever released a perfect album

I don't think the BEATLES ever made a perfect LP either , but they got closer than the stones .......to me the closest perfect album is ....led zep 4 and physical graffitti ......then , and this may Suprise a few considering how hard I am on pete and roger ......but who's next is almost perfect as well. The stones never made a all time lp , they are a all time singles band though

Yes music is subjective to a certain degree but ill side with Ella Fitzgerald , Nina Simone , Neil Young , Herbie Hancock , Jimi Hendrix , Neil Diamond , Brian Eno and countless others who rated and covered the Beatles rather than your good self. If you can't even acknowledge The Beatles were incredibly melodic -even in their "teeny bopper" days - then i have to question your ears. Who wrote the first Rolling Stones single btw ? Oh yes Lennon & McCartney. Lennon was also 100% right in that rather bitter sounding interview when said that The Stones as good as they were , were always behind The Beatles and playing catch up. The Beatles also introduced experimental shit like Stockhausen and likes of indian drone music to the masses. Not the other way round. The suggestion "tried to be experimental" is laughable. They were and did it in universal language of melody still.

Sorry ..but that is your opinion ...who cares who, wrote the stones first single They certainly never wrote anything as grimy as gimme shelter , or as cool as sympathy...again it's a petsonal preference ..I think MACCA was a modern day englbert Humperdinck And LENNON wrote some good tunes ....but he was no,musical genius and had he lived his legend would not be what it was ....so fuck off ..I was being nice ,,,

Even in their teen bop days, they were writing stuff like I Wanna Hold Your Hand, which is probably in my opinion pop perfection.
And to label tracks like Tomorrow Never Knows or Love You To as falling short is a fallacy, those songs paved the way for Eastern sounds, drone and arguably drum loops to be used in the main stream. And in my opinion, Helter Skelter, despite it perhaps lacking lyrically, is just as gritty rocks just as hard as Gimme Shelter, maybe Revolution is up there too. Lennon would still have his mammoth legacy. Beatles sold a shit ton of albums and inspired a hell of a lot of bands (the reason we're all here actually is because of one of those bands) so Lennon, as well as the other three would still have their legacy.
Lastly, Rubber Soul and Revolver. Those two to me are perfect albums. Songs like In My Life, Eleanor Rigby just off those two albums alone ain't your average bands songs. Fuck being the pulse of rock n roll, they're the fucking heart of music.

The genius of the Beatles in their "kiddy pop" years was that their songs were just so incredibly layered and beautifully crafted. The way they handled harmonies and melodies was just brilliant and in the 60's it was something else to have such complex and brilliantly composed and arranged songs. That is the reason their pop albums still stand strong among their later more progressive work.
As for Sgt. Pepper, I'm sorry but it is simply one of, if not the greatest album of all time(the only other album that'd come close is Abbey Road or Dark Side). It was brilliant in the 60's and it is brilliant now for the simple reason that it pushed the envelope. To me, Sgt. Pepper was the first great "Rock" album. The sheer genius of the songs and the juxtaposition between Lennon and McCartney's songwriting is another reason for its greatness in my opinion. Not only that, it contains probably the greatest song of all time, A Day In The Life. The album is such a great mix of psychadellia and rock, the likes of which had never been seen before. It ventured into a musical landscape which was unheard of at the time. The distorted guitars, the orchestral arrangements, the stereo imaging and Indian instruments are just some of the innovations on the album. If you're a guitar player and you've attemp to play the songs from this album or any of their work, you'll see a whole new layer to the music which makes you appreciate the work of the Beatles and this record even more. Which is one of the reasons this record is cited as an influence by so many countless musicians. Apart from that I'm pretty sure this one album has influenced more pop culture, music, fashion, etc. than all the Stones' work combined.
The thing with the Stones was that they never pushed the envelope. The Beatles were always innovating and trying out new things whereas I've not heard the Stones do anything like that. Now that isn't a slight on them but this innovation is what makes the Beatles a far superior band. They started off as a pop/rock n roll band and over the years evolved into the pioneers of rock. And the number of genres they've ventured into is quite astounding and in my opinion they've never experimented just for the sake of it, they've always nailed whatever genre they attempted and pioneered some of the genres on the way, be it pop, folk-rock, experimental music, rock or psychedelia. I find it ammusing that the Stones had the image of rebels whereas the Beatles were the so called good guys. Musically speaking it was quite the opposite, The Beatles were most definitely the rebels. So the Beatles did more for music in the 10 years they were together than the Rolling Stones have done for the 50+ years they've been together in my opinion.
I understand not everyone has to "get" the Beatles but dismissing them outright is just being daft.
