I agree that obviously they have access to the final multi-track master tapes for the finished albums. But so far we've heard no outtakes or alternate takes from the studio sessions.

Ah, fair point. I guess this depends to an extent on what's classed as an out-take or alternate take. I'd personally put Shakermaker (Slide up mix) in that category due to its different vocal take. Also Bring it on Down (Monnow Valley), another different recording and mix to the final version.
Granted that these two were both exclusive to the Japanese import, and were stereo mixes done at the time rather than new mixes prepared for the reissue. Perhaps we'll see some material from the multitracks on a later reissue or box set.

I'm sure Noel is holding tons of shit back for a future (and eventual) anthology album. There is no real why Coming On Strong, Lock All The Doors or I Am The Walrus studio versions weren't on the DM reissue. To me those reissues are a little under cooked in the studio out takes department. I don't need live versions. I'm still convinced that when the Definitely Maybe reissue was being collated Noel listened back to the tapes which contained Comin' On Strong and Lock All The Doors and that's when he decided to rework the track for Chasing Yesterday. Mark Coyle mentions in the sleeve notes for the replica Live Demonstration Tape that those lost "gems" as well as Must Be The Music and a Real People cover weren't available but we know that 3 of them are. Coyle also stated in the run up to Chasing Yesterday how it had a spirit of Definitely Maybe too it.... Well there you go! I agree. Noel had also recently mentioned in a radio interview that the "extra stuff that ended up on the reissues, wasn't even half of what was meant to be included". I can't come up with the exact source from the top of my head, but could dig it out if anyone wants me to. That press comment by Mark Coyle was however meant to be a joke. He had visited Noel in the studio in early 2014, I think while Coyle was promoting the DM reissue for a few little interviews, and was instructed by Noel to tell the press so. Plus, Noel had stated in an NME interview from January that there's a "bootleg of pre-McGee stuff out there, called 'Basement Tapes' or something", that even he hasn't heard yet. That might not be the exact quote, but apparently he hadn't listened back to in early 2015. Which I honestly can't believe to be frank. |

I would imagine that once he decided he wasn't going to do the whole album that it got binned. DYKWIM? is the logical one to release out of the two as it was the triumphant sounding comeback single of 1997, and it would have been fairly pointless to Noel to release 'My Big Mouth' as well without doing the whole album as well as opening himself up to constant questioning about completing the other tracks. I have said this before but I think one of the problems he may well have found if he did more than the "lazy sod" routine he has wheeled out suggests is that if you strip away too much of the feedback, multi layered tracks, etc. of most of those songs then they cease to have the impact of 'Be Here Now' and become simply "alright" rock n' roll songs that perhaps don't stand up as well in that format to DM or WTSMG? Love it or hate it the flaws, grandiose posturing and wall of sound are an integral part of what makes BHN, and all a full 'rethink' would achieve at best is to demonstrate that those songs were as good as they were going to sound in 1997, and at worst highlight some of the "should have done xyz instead" decisions of the era. |

Amazing that gems like this are still turning up. Thanks very much for the well-wishes. I've had a rough year to be candid, the hardest. But still plugging away somehow.
