Did Oasis ever record a studio version?

No. There was however a live performance of it from 1994 that was put on The Masterplan (was a B-Side to Cigarettes and Alcohol) that essentially sounds as close as you'd get to the studio version. Already epic in it's own right. Check it out:

Yes, they did record an unreleased studio take of I am the Walrus at Sawmills Studio. The tracking sheet for this recording was displayed at the Chasing the Sun exhibition in Tokyo, and can be seen in the video below. Click 1080p for best quality. Below: Still frame showing Sawmills tracking sheet for the studio recording of I am the Walrus. When I last spoke to recording engineer Anjali Dutt I asked her about this recording. Thanks again to her for taking the time to contribute this info. Q: I've enclosed another pic that may be of interest [click the thumbnail below to enlarge] a cassette of rough mixes from Eden Studios. I'm intrigued by the presence of I am the Walrus in the tracklisting. Was this a live version or did they attempt a studio cover? Am I right in thinking that Cigarettes and Alcohol and Digsy's Dinner were the only two final mixes on there, and the rest rough mixes? (Above: cassette of rough mixes for Definitely Maybe completed at Eden Studios. Original photo by Rob from the Britpop store. Scan by Tom S). Anjali: It's great to see my handwriting on the cassette box and this can only mean that there was a studio recording of I am the Walrus and strangely enough, I do suddenly remember clearly that we did record it; it was very fluent and it was good. I imagine Ignition were probably asking for progress cassettes. So we sent up the mixes we had and roughs of the others, as annotated on the box. The original interview can be read in this thread. Hope this helps. live4ever.proboards.com/thread/79782/more-anjali-dutt-on-definitely#ixzz3gvGlJH3x

The latter sounds actually close to a studio version.

No worries, glad to help out. I'm not sure, but I guess it may be something they would consider releasing on a later reissue (30th anniversary perhaps? Just speculation on my part there). There are so many different recording sessions for Definitely Maybe, so this seems to give scope for bonus tracks on future releases.
One thing I noticed in that "Chasing the Sun" video is that there was an abandoned Sawmills take of Slide Away. I had previously thought that they didn't attempt further recordings of the song, after capturing that stellar vocal take at Monnow Valley (which Owen Morris mixed for the album). There are also the numerous different takes on Slide Away that Bonehead recalls from the Batchelor / Monnow Valley sessions, one of which is said to be much slower and with more of a "Comfortably Numb" feel than the final version.

Woah! Would love to hear that. Imagine Slide Away with a Pink Floyd sound! Now THAT'S the kind of stuff that should've been on the reissues/should be on there in the future I think there might be way more interesting material than we're aware of.

I'm sure Noel is holding tons of shit back for a future (and eventual) anthology album. There is no real why Coming On Strong, Lock All The Doors or I Am The Walrus studio versions weren't on the DM reissue. To me those reissues are a little under cooked in the studio out takes department. I don't need live versions.

I think the stuff that's been on Youtube for years will not be included in future projects (or at least I hope so). That would be a major rip off and a waste of space really.

I'm still convinced that when the Definitely Maybe reissue was being collated Noel listened back to the tapes which contained Comin' On Strong and Lock All The Doors and that's when he decided to rework the track for Chasing Yesterday. Mark Coyle mentions in the sleeve notes for the replica Live Demonstration Tape that those lost "gems" as well as Must Be The Music and a Real People cover weren't available but we know that 3 of them are. Coyle also stated in the run up to Chasing Yesterday how it had a spirit of Definitely Maybe too it.... Well there you go!

It's all a bit too coincidental, especially with the time scheme. I don't buy that Tesco story. I also think that it's inclusion on Chasing Yesterday might be one of the reasons why it didn't end up on the reissue.

We're pretty sure that the demos on the reissue came from a Oasis Live! (aka Live Demonstration) cassette source, and the only versions we have of Coming on Strong and Lock All The Doors are those pretty shit mix with the double tracking on Liam's vocal. I wouldn't be surprised if they considered them too shit for release.

...Wonder if we'll ever hear this as there was a perfect opportunity to stick it on the definitely maybe deluxe edition (from chasing the sun). Maybe this could have something to do with copyrights? Judging by the tracklistings for the first two Chasing The Sun releases, the people compiling them simply don't have access to the original studio session tapes. So far, no alternate studio takes - or studio takes of unreleased songs - have been included. There's been a couple of alternate studio mixes included but I suspect they were lifted from reference CDrs made at the time. Not sure what the reason for this is. Maybe the studio working tapes have been lost or destroyed. It's more likely that the cost of getting them out of storage is simply too high for this project. Sony - or whoever holds the session tapes - may also charge a fee to access them.

Sony - or whoever holds the session tapes - may also charge a fee to access them. I feel pretty confident that the multitrack master tapes for these albums survive. My take on this is that they wanted to release purely original 90s mixes for the Chasing the Sun reissues of DM and MG, plus the additional time and expense involved in specially creating new mixes of bonus tracks for the release may have been another factor in not accessing the multitracks this time. The deluxe edition books did include photos of some of the multitrack tape indexes though. For the most part it appears that they used mixes made at the time, newly transferred in 24/96 from the analogue half-inch mixdown tapes. The multitracks for Definitely Maybe (and Morning Glory) will have been accessed relatively recently to create the stems used in the Guitar Hero game. Also, Neil Dorfsman was sent a Pro Tools transfer of the Morning Glory multitracks so he could create a 5.1 mix for the SACD. A few years later Dave Sardy used the multitrack for the song Morning Glory in order to remix the track for the Goal! soundtrack. And, most recently, Noel mentioned that the Be Here Now reissue will include a new mix of D'you Know What I Mean? So I think the masters are safe and sound. I'm not sure they have the multitracks of the Liverpool demos though, other than Columbia (which was remixed in October '93 for the White Label demo). As mentioned by Jim and deadman earlier, Mark Coyle says in the sleeve notes for the replica Live Demonstration cassette that the demos were remastered from the best surviving cassette source. I think the 8-tracks might survive in the collection of the Real People though. Tony Griffiths mentions that they still have the original 8-track of Rock n Roll Star (if I remember rightly) in the Definitely Maybe DVD documentary. Hope this helps.
