I just put this question to my dad, to which he replied "Stop giving me poisonous questions about duff bands!" He's not joking either, he really does hate both of them. But both of these bands seem to be pretty popular on this forum so with that in mind I've created an incredibly special poll for the purpose. Obviously they're very different bands and hard to compare but unfortunately that's the nature of the poll. I've made my love of The Smiths very clear and at the moment it's stronger than ever; I'm listening to them more than anybody else, particularly the '83-'84 era. I do like Nirvana but I don't feel as if I could ever love them.

The Smiths without a motherfudging shadow of a doubt. My 'The Queen Is Dead' vinyl is my most played prized possession. Even Morrissey's Solo stuff I prefer to Nirvana (and than some of the Smiths stuff) This, of course, is my own opinion Not to say I don't like Nirvana, a few good tunes!

I could've probably gone much of my life without hearing much of the Smiths if it weren't for the Oasis connection and having had a few annoying ex girlfriends like them.
Now, Nirvana, I couldn't have avoided because they changed the world.
That's not to say I don't like Smiths, just not a huge fan, really like a handful of songs.
I just like to party. You know, take some shitty commercial marijuana, drink some beer, listen to Nirvana as an adolescent and discover yourself and life.
God bless.

I'm much, much more a Nirvana fan than a Smiths fan. Outside a handful of songs they've never really clicked with me - Can't say I'm a huge fan of Morrisey's voice.
Love Nirvana though. A ridiculous number of classics amongst Nevermind and In Utero with more than a handful of great tracks on Bleach, found as b-sides, or as demos. One of America's greats.

I've got to say, I love how on this forum you can do a comparison without it turning into an argument. Everyone just shares their own opinions and backs it up with their own honest reasons. It's very refreshing (compared to other forums)

This is a question with no right answer , and much like a poll a couple of weeks ago ( GNR vs stone roses ) its skewed .......most of the UK know the smiths very very well , and of course know nirvana .....
But a lot of the usa fans who aren't as old as me or others , or not so UK centric will of course lean towards nirvana , because the smiths are not relevant in the states on mainstream radio anymore ( they really never were )
That said as much as I like nirvana .........I do remember when the smiths were played on usa radio alot , and for me it's THE SMITHS all day long .......one thing I miss so much about the UK is hearing the smiths in bars and clubs regulary and girls dancing to it .....you don't get that here anymore

This is a bit of a silly question because they're completely different? It's like having a poll saying who's better Bob Dylan or the Sex Pistols. Not really a fair comparison. A better one would be Nirvana vs Pearl Jam? or Pearl Jam vs Soundgarden. The Smiths vs The Cure would be a good one.
The poll should be of two similar bands in the same era for it to be fair. Bob Dylan by the way.

Strange comparison, both are brilliant, but I'll go with the Smiths for now.

They're beyond different musically so weird comparison. I'm still going to go with Nirvana because I've known them longer.

Yeah......being American and a young buck at age 10-12 with Nirvana exploding, pretty hard to ignore. I mean literally everyone bought Nevermind. What a force. I can't believe I was that cool so young. Been a steady decline since..... Oasis got me into The Smiths and I know plenty of people my age that don't even know who they are or just a song or two. Usually a tune used in a popular movie like Closer or 500 Days of Summer. Nirvana was a wrecking machine in a world of puss-ies at the time. They made Guns N Roses look tame and Van Halen cartoon characters.

Completely different bands as has been pointed out already.
And I like them both. Lately I've been listening more to The Smiths, but I did go through a Nirvana phase years ago.

too hard to answer. they both bring different things to the table. somedays i prefer one, other days vice versa. if i had a gun...to my head, id probably go with nirvana. but id say that could be driven by nostalgia...

I know it's a strange comparison of two vastly different bands. But isn't that what the polling station's for? The reason for the poll was because I was watching a TV programme that played The Smiths immediately followed by Nirvana, and the idea was stuck in my head. I had also just finished my last exam and was a little bit pished.

its hard enough picking whos a better band when both groups play the same style. e.g. the who vs the stones. but when you compare two different genres it makes it almost impossible...

If I went on Mastermind, my specialist subject would be The Smiths. That's a good indicator of where my preference lies!

Being you were 10 or12 when nirvana broke, you must be referring to VAN HAGAR .....not VAN HALEN , who despite DAVE , rocked harder and better than anyone between 78-85 , NIRVANA NOR ANYONE ELSE COULD MAKE THAT ( 78-85) GROUP LOOK LIKE CARTOON CHARACHTERS ..... NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING TRUE NO MATTER HOW MANY " COOL SHADE SMILES YOU USE " oh oh and no BAND MADE GNR LOOK TAME ...you like them better fine but Tame Yea ...no dont disagree with you often , and if you meant the poppish HAGAR ERA ........BUT VINTAGE VH ?? No way no how , and I don't care how many costumes DAVE wore , that band were balls out and listen to tnere first 6 lps , from eruption to top jimmy tney were AMERICAS HARD ROCK BAND ........TURNS OUT ...STILL ARE JUDGING BY THE WAY THEY KICKED OFF THEILLBOARD AWARDS ,

The Smiths, and its a pretty easy choice for me at least.
Nirvana's superb, not doubt but there's bands, in my opinion that do what they do and do it better. There isn't really another band like The Smiths. I know the Nirvana die hards will say the same thing about Nirvana, but no one plays guitar like Marr and no one sings like Moz. Their vibe and sound is so original and timeless. Often copied but never truly replicated. The Smith's hold the title for best teenage heartbreak band. What's Nirvana's title? I wouldn't agree with either of these but maybe best American band of the 90's or loudest three piece ever?
Look it was probably dope as fuck wearing flannel and listening to Nirvana in the early 90's, having them kick out all the flashy rockstars, but I've never been a huge, huge fan of the grunge scene or Nirvana. Just don't get the appeal really. I'm prefer the 90's American slacker rock of Pavement or nerd rock of Ben Folds Five/Weezer than I am of the sluggy grunge of the seattle scene. I'm more of a hopeless romantic than a tortured soul type of fella.

I really am saddened that Nirvana's impact and importance is lost on younger generations.... Bands like Weezer, may've never been signed if it weren't for Nirvana. Literally, the music being made was different once Nevermind was released. Not a huge Pavement fan, they're decent. Again, an annoying ex girlfriend liked them; God, I hope she's dead, actually, I know she's not, saw her a few years ago and told her to go fuck herself. I never claimed to be perfect, eva. God bless.

Literally one day I'm listening to Milli Vanilli and shit like that and the next it's completely different, it was insane. God bless.

God bless. You're definitely right about how Nirvana opened the door to a lot of alternative rock, but the college radio movement of the 80's had to reach a saturation point at some time. Nirvana influence isn't necessarily lost, but they are kinda of a band that you grow out of at least for my generation, Oasis could be put in the category as well mind you. All subjective I suppose. I grew up on classic rock and when I was 11-12 I started listening to Nirvana. They helped me find bands that i really like today such as The Pixies, but I've kinda moved on from them. I can appreciate them and I'll put on their acoustic mtv performance or come as you are every so often, but in general I don't play them that much. Obviously a lot of you guys were there when Nirvana was making it big. I was about the age the baby on Nevermind was released, so y'all will have a perspective that I don't, and can appreciate them in a way that I never can. Still, I'm just listening to the music 20 years later. I have no sentimental attachment to them and I'm just think there's a lot of bands better than them. Nirvana definitely means more than most of those bands in terms of rock n' roll evolution within popular culture so respect to that. Good vibes and blessings your way Let It🩸. I love getting perspective from you guys who are a bit older on how music and the music industry used to be like. Its changed a lot in my lifetime, so I can only imagine how much it has for yall.
