So, The Strypes announced their 2nd album. Little Victories will come out the 24th of july through Virgin EMI Records. The debut "Snapshot" charted at #5 in UK and #2 in Ireland. The band got some serious "fans" like our Noelio, Paul Weller, Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Dave Grohl Jeff Beck etc. Other than that, they think that Blur > Oasis. Shame on them. New song #1 New song #2 iTunes link (tracklisting): itunes.apple.com/gb/album/little-victories-deluxe/id994314710Gigs: thestrypes.com/gigs/

I liked their first album. Saw them last year and the gig was good. Loved their The Specials cover.

I'm going to see them live for the first time next month in Buenos Aires. I love the first album and I love the new tunes, specially Eighty-Four. For me, it sounds a little bit like early Arctic Monkeys.

I like their style but I find the frontmanannoying, but he's really young, not even 18 I guess. He's pathetically trying to be a Liam Gallagher-Alex Turner hybrid.
On the other hand I love the guitarist, he played for Paul Weller in this:

On the other hand I love the guitarist, he played for Paul Weller in this: Being brutally honest, I get really tired of these types of bands - it's the same style, same retro influences, all wrapped up in a generic, typically British influenced dull guitar sound. I don't know how many more bands will come on the scene and proclaim themselves as the 'next big thing' (usually perpetuated by the NME) but it has got really tiresome now. The frontmen are all the same - all trying to be hybrids of Liam Gallagher, Paul Weller, Alex Turner, John Lennon, etc, etc, with their usual Gallagher-esque 'rent a quote' and their style which has come straight from a 'Build Your Own Rockstar' kit their mummy bought them for Christmas. The reason these - and many similar retro-influenced bands - fail so badly is because, at the end of the day, they aren't anything new, offering nothing but turgid songs with no melody or lyric - quite simply, lacking the most important thing of all: songwriting talent. Their heroes were cool because they were trend setters, they were fresh, they were new, and they were exciting at the time and that all derived from great songwriting talent, and I don't think many of these young acts understand that. Imitating the style and sound of your heroes will never get you far. Any new great act to come will be be comepletely at odds with these NME bands - at best, they will merely nod to such retro influences, but not to the point of becoming consumed by their style, sound and swagger so much that they fail to carve out their own pathway.

Agree.
And you can have all the swagger and cool sunglasses and leather jackets in the world, but if you don't have an own sound and the tunes aren't there, you will sink like a stone. A stone with swagger, yes, but still a stone.

What do you drink? I feel like I need to buy you a pint after that post. 100% exactly how I feel. The British musical press is just so crap and overly trendy. NME ( New Mediocre Express ) hypes up 2-3 trendy shitty lad/pub bands that just don't do anything new. There's a void in rock n' roll currently and you can't just filled it with the same old shtick especially if the tunes aren't even good/retread of old stuff.

To be honest The Strypes are more into 50s Rock N Roll than typical british music sound, this is not typical british music sound IMHO.. It's nothing new, but what's new at this point? I think it's a quite strange choice, I respect them because they're not even 18 and trying to break music with a really old sound. And they're good, you can't tell me they're not playing all around the world. The guitarist is a fooking beast.

Totally agree, you see these headlines emblazoned across the NME with some upstart claiming 'WE'RE GONNA TURN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY ON ITS HEAD!'. No you are not! You are PART of the problem in todays music, NOT the solution!

I don't think so. They are still teenagers, probably not even +18. And they're doing good and saying that all the modern music is shit is just stupid. And moaning about the status of rock music while throwing shit at good artists is even worse. They have "supporters" like Noel, Dave Grohl, Elton John, Jeff Beck, Roger Daltrey etc. I don't think they're stupid, they know a little bit about music.
If you think ALL bands are shit STOP moaning about the status of rock music. STOP, god. If you don't support the new good bands and you moan about the status of rock music you're a HUGE part of the problem. Because you're throwing shit at good artists. Or do you want to tell me that Temples are shit? Instead of moaning buy the albums and maybe the rock scene will be better.

New song 'A Good Night's Sleep And A Cab Fare Home'
I saw them live last month, it was great. I met the guys after the concert, they were very kind and down to earth. I hope they stay that way for a long time.

I like this new single, is the closest thing to pop they've ever done as of now. Crazy to think that they are still around 17-20 years old. So much potential.

The album is out!
The singles, or whatever you want to call them, are all cool.
For the rest...
Queen of the Half Crown is great; Great verses, catchy chorus and yet again a great guitar work, but that's not a news, Josh McClorey is the man. Crazy he's only 19/20.
(I Wanna Be Your) Everyday is the first ballad, it almost sounds like a "Hard rock ballad", the intro reminds a bit of Stairway to Heaven, 2 or 3 notes are the same. Good chorus, I like the lyrics. The first guitar solo is good, the second (1 minute and 30 seconds long) is brilliant.
Best Man and Three Streets and a Village Green are good. I prefer the first one, the guitar work saves them though, the melody is average.
Cruel Brunette got a proper Indie Rock vibe, in the chorus in particular.
Status Update is good.

I agree that the singles are great. The half of the album sounds good, it's almost what I expected. But... As first impression, the other half a copule of songs sounds like songs from a Disney-produced-pseudo-Rock band. They make the band loose the identity from the previous album...
It's the firs listening, hope my idea of the album changes in future listening...
