a friend of mine just sent me a link to this video, with a little summary to go along with it ... he wrote:
you know, it always seems that 'the great ones' can come thru in the clutch. and man does he ever here, especially toward the end of the song. just like mj hitting a 20-ft jumper at the buzzer, or like tom brady throwing a td pass with seconds to go to win the game. even though the drugs were raging thru his system and he could hardly stand anymore, he gives in my opinion the greatest performance of his entire life. i have never been a big elvis fan, but after seeing this i might just have to check some of his stuff out.
and here it is.... watch.

There's a certain pathos and sadness that comes from actually watching that and witnessing a wreck of a man trying to musically soldier through his addictions and demons, but I close my eyes and just listen and there's nothing that touches me emotionally in this performance.
His voice sounds good and it's technically a good, solid performance but I'm sorry - I don't feel anything from it.
For a start it's way too fast to sustain any sort of emotional build - which is what this beautiful song needs to work. I feel like I'm watching a decent singer being curtailed by an artificially abrupt modern "idol" type performance.
It's the equivalent of a once great marathon runner having to crawl over the finish line. Elvis ran much better races.
Don't get me wrong, I love Elvis at his best - but this isn't it.
